My avatar shows a stream flowing nearby my summer house. It's kind of soothing to look at a rural landscape and imagine an old-fashioned life on the countryside, working on the fields and enjoying the outdoors. I wish the future post-oil agricultural working class could see their life in similar terms... who knows, I might end up as one of them.

Does this promote sex with metallic objects? If so, count me in!

It's a photo taken with my mobile phone while out walking in the French Alps. Obviously not during the winter! :-D

Time for a new avatar, Zardoz

Stelarc, posthumanist and artist, implants "third ear" inside his arm

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BoingBoing.net', 'E')arlier this year, Stelarc finally found a medical doctor willing to implant a cell-cultivated ear beneath the skin on the artist's forearm.

The resulting body-mod is shown here. Photo by Nina Sellars, who is also married to the artist.

Stelarc is apparently planning to go through a few more surgeries to give it more definition.

"He's also going to implant a mic inside the ear that will connect to a bluetooth transmitter, so the ear can broadcast audio from the internet wirelessly," explains former BB guestblogger and sometimes Stelarc collaborator Karen Marcelo. "That Stelarc, always got something up his sleeve! He likes to say that too. "

Stelarc in Ritopek

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BoingBoing.net', 'M')ost people in Belgrade have never heard of Stelarc and just vaguely know of Ritopek.

I met Stelarc last week in Athens, where I listened to his literally heartbreaking presentation on the obsolete human condition and the body's failure to follow the technological arc of his cyber-desires.

He spoke of breaking the boundaries between death and life by preserving bodies in plastic, by repairing bodies with 3D fabricated artificial organs, of unborn future people grown in vitro outside the wombs of women.

The linear analog counting of our lifespans will cease; we will not longer tread a natural path from life to death... We must find a different, truer way of talking and living.

Humans have always feared themselves and their capacities, in past, in present, and in future: man is an obsolete body in the space of The Other.

Very postmodern: very posthuman...

I'm holding out for superpowers. Until I can control weather or have lasers shoot out of my eyes I don't want to hear about getting some f#$kin' ear in my arm. I want a gatling gun attached to my arm if I get anything.

i went to one of Stelarc's lectures at a design conference about 20 years ago.

some of his work, like using electrodes on his stomach to control an external robot arm, is ground-breaking high-tech; i got the impression that the Japanese robotics community has a lot of respect for Stelarc, as a robotics researcher.

on the other hand, some of his meditations, like hanging naked with double-size fish-hooks piercing his body in 20 different places, are an acquired taste that is not personally appealing.

BUT, if he's going to improvise, i'd vote for a full-bore "Kuato" embedded in his stomach - remember the midget prophet in the movie Total Recall ?

Stelarc is a full-on techno-weirdo. The kind that was celebrated and looked to as a hero in the Mondo2000 days, the early days of WIRED, etc. That all kind of lost its lustre when the dot-com thing crashed and people, millions of them, learned that no it's not normal for your stocks to go up 20% a year.
