The oil isn't is short supply. Refineries are in short supply. If we were allowed to build more refineries then the supply of gasoline would increase. Furthermore, we need a national standard for gasoline. Currently we have about 2 dozen different blends of gasoline that are required by federal, state and local laws. This causes the refineries to produce small quantities of each type of gasoline. If one refinery has a shortage or has to shut down then the gas they supply increases in price because other refineries may not be able to take up the slack in production because they are producing a different type of gasoline. This is the major cause of high gas prices. Last year President Bush temporarily removed those restrictions and the price of gas dropped. Now those restrictions are back and the gas prices are increasing again. Do you see the problem? Government mandates are the problem. Let the free market be free again and it will work.

Try explaining the situation by telling people that the problem is that it takes five time as much energy to drill, extract, process and bring to market a gallon of gasoline today than it did 75 years ago, and that number is increasing every year. That is, the energy cost of energy, is getting prohibitively high. They have a tendency to look at you strangely at first, but after a while, it does soak into a few numbed brains.

From what I know of America most of the people who intended to take part will wake up the next day and remember then that they were supposed to not have bought those twenty gallons yesterday. If they can't be bothered to go out into the streets to protest two stolen elections what makes anybody think they can be bothered to forestall a little consumption?

Not much has ever come from that collection of fat, lazy, narrow minded, conservative to their own detriment red-necks except for the capital to keep the richest one percent in power, and a whole lot of misguided complaint.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

So true. We've gotten to accustomed to live spent watching the latest trashTV viewing experience on that HD PlasmaTV that was purchased off the proceeds from the lastest Refi of the mortgage to begin to question what has been going on in the world around us.
