So when the bad times come, you'll "bug out"

That's the plan, isn't it? Things get bad, we get in the SUV and depart to our haven of bucolic splendor, complete with off-grid solar power array, hardwood trees, and fertile fields.

Lovely. I've put the parts I found particularly interesting in red.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') paper the organizers are writing, summarizing their recommendations, urges local governments and individuals to build underground bomb shelters, much as people did in the early days of the Cold War; encourages authorities who survive to prevent evacuation of at least some of the areas attacked for three days to avoid roadway paralysis and damage from exposure to radioactive fallout; and proposes suspending regulations on radiation exposure so that first responders would be able to act, even if that caused higher cancer rates.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')"If one bomb goes off, there are likely to be more to follow," Carter said. "This fact, that nuclear terrorism will appear as a syndrome rather than a single episode, has major consequences." It would, he added, require powerful government intervention to force people to do something many may resist -- staying put.

Fred Ikle, a former Defense Department official in the Reagan administration who authored a book last year urging attack preparation, "Annihilation from Within," said that the government should plan how it could restrict civil liberties and enforce a sort of martial law in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, but also have guidelines for how those liberties could be restored later.

Don't think that keeping everyone penned up in a cage under martial law is the extent of what can happen.

Night vision + 4WD + maps and compass.

You wonder why all the nutty survivalists have 4WD's?

Right theres your answer. They can block all the roads they want to. I'll take the "short cut". Oh, and I'll be doing it at night without lights. Good luck finding me.

If any nukes are used, it will be against Muslims who can't shoot back. None of the nuclear weapons holders are going to fire on the others is my prediction. Not even during the die-off. That's my prediction, anyway, I could be wrong.

I thought you were leaning toward the big sun-on-earth scenario ? Maybe I'm not reading enough posts.

Anyway, worrying about a nuke is pointless IMO - lots of other, more likely things to worry about. Dirty bomb supposedly would cause panic, but the upside to that would be to clear out all the SUV driving, gun-toting panicy ninnys to the countryside (once they crawled through 12 hours of traffic jams). I might even be able to get a table at my favorite jazz club after that.

I'd like to know what they planned to do to stop the panicing people from getting on the road. Once they are there, they'll just be stuck from going anywhere and the authorities wouldn't be able to do much even if they wanted to arrest or whatever.

So I better test my geiger counter this month and pick up another roll of poly.

Figure we are staying. It would have to be really bad and close to get us to bug out, especially as I do not know where we could go that would be any better. See my brother in Miami - NOT.

Call me a masochist but if the shit really hits the fan I plan on staying around and getting some pictures, if it really gets as bad as some think I will be the first to admit I am in no way really prepared.

It's all too weird and I don't know what to think. How is anyone to know what is going to happen? Maybe the sun-on-earth scenario will play out after all. But today (can't speak for tomorrow) I think that nukes will be used against people who can't shoot back and not at those who can.

Think about the advantages of a nuke going off in the states! Scare us all sh*^less and we'd welcome martial law with open arms. Even after 9/11 no one but NEOPO and Raph would believe it were an inside job. All it takes is one nuke in one expendable Midwestern city then we'd carte blanche a global war on terror(WWIII) with ease. The logistics make sense - contained mitigation, demand destruction, etc...

156 miles to ranch. Three routes to get there with waypoints every 30-50 miles. Bravado, bribes and bullshit to get me there.

Jack's right about thinking one can hop in a SUV and take to the hills. Unless you are being expected somewhere you are going to find the hills do not want you.

You think like I do. An arial map of regional high-tension power lines helps too.

Perhaps. What if a terrorist group gets a couple low-yield tactical devices, then detonates them in two U.S. cities, one week apart? Will people remain in the cities?

What if a terrorist cell combines radiological medical waste with conventional explosives (i.e., a dirty bomb hooked up as a car bomb) and detonates it in a population center? Then they do it again a week later?

I think this is what the meeting considered, rather than a full exchange between nuclear powers.
