Entertainment Connoisseurs

Watching movies is something many of us love to do. I recall what ayoob said about it when he told us that his favorite movie was the Clint Eastwood flick, The Unforgiven. Now I have a lot of respect for ayoob. He said that he couldn't live out his life as a connoisseur of entertainment because of Peak Oil and felt he had to take proactive steps to try and survive the coming disaster. So apparently he is moving to the Pacific Northwest when he's done with his medical training in the wastelands of LA. My feeling is that the Pacific Northwest is toast like everywhere else. There's no place to go. Perhaps the jet-stream schemes to harness the energy up there will work. Perhaps the schemes to sequester carbon with agchar will drop the CO2 in the atmosphere. Maybe we'll use carbon nanofibers to build power plants in the stratosphere. Maybe technology will save us just like the general public assumes. Then again maybe we are all toast. I'm watching Butterfly Effect 2. Charming flick. It involves the paranoid notion that no matter how we try to change the past, the present still turns out fucked.

Hell, I'm living life as a conoisseur of good food, good wine and good entertainment and it ain't stopping me from preparing. Even now there's more to life then just constantly freaking out about a mid to long term disaster that's coming one's way. One can enjoy the food and the view from the LA Prime Steakhouse on Sat evening while working on the raised beds and one's carpentry skills the next morning. Sooner or later, I'll be taking the Capitol Corridor to San Fran for the opera and eating at the Jardiniere. The view ain't there but the food is better and the entertainment is just as good and the popln density will be lower, the water table higher and the locals a bit more able to transition to a low energy existence. One day that might cease and I'll just be staying on the farm or within a gated community most of the time: by then I might as well be white haired and wrinkled and shitting in diapers regardless of peak oil. If I can still play Texas Hold'em with the nephews and make the grandkids laugh, that will be as much as I could ever ask for. Enjoy life while you're livin.

WRT one place being as screwed as the next: maybe or maybe not. We've a lot more problems here in So Cal then they have up in Cascadia: popl'n density, explosive social tensions and water availability being the bigg'uns. Ayoob is just getting better odds of survival up there and doing what he's doing than if he was down here slackin'. That's all I'm doing: improving the odds and enjoying things at the same time. Nothing will be certain.

I go to the bar to drink Boulevard Pale Ale and watch movies like Splash on the classic movie channel. Does that count?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ferrelgiraffe', 'T')he pacific northwest is toast...There is an area below eugene Oregon down to about san francisco, west of Interstate five that will not get hit...Excepting Eureka california which will dissappear...I would not go too close to the ocean and elevation should be 300-400 feet...dont go anywhere near Bremerton washington there will be a smoking hole 1 mile deep with multiple strikes there...in general anything east of bremerton washington and interstate 5 will have zero survival...Fortuna california may survive except it is home to some electronic companies that may take a hit...at least 40 miles from ANY airport. there really is not much space to locate in considering the safe zone is 40 miles radius, this doesnt leave much...They may just carpet bomb highway 101 every 20 miles and that would destroy the entire USA eventually, you could survive if you are in a hilly area 10 miles from US 101.

What in the holy name of Jesus are you talking about?

Anyplace with water, farmable land, and more than 50-100 miles away from the nearest Interstate highway, will be a good place in the US.

As for entertainment, Spiderman 3 had great special effects, but there were a few scenes that looked fake. The plot is bubble-gum, tastes alright, kinda enjoyable, but predictable and unsatisfying. Also, no sense of doom, pure escapist fantasy.

Did I mention, though, that the special effects were really good? Something else to enjoy at the peak of our civilization: peak movie special effects.
