Thread dedicated towards constructing Ocean City

Unread postby Kylon » Thu 26 Apr 2007, 08:34:10

Okay, we all know it, were screwed.

Our government is becoming a fascist state if it isn't already, multiculturalism is destroying western civilization culture and replacing it with others, while destroying communities in the process, and the sphere of corporate influence grows larger by the day.

So what do we do?

The only thing I can think to do in order to get away from both resource shortages and government/corporate/fascist control, is to construct cities on the ocean.

Ocean cities have the advantage that they have a nearly unlimited supply of energy from the thermal difference between the bottom of the ocean and the top of the ocean, an unlimited supply of water (coming from a certain type of thermal converter (which you can find on the DOE website, I think) which generates steam), and with the proper technology, one should be able to cheaply and effectively mine underwater, allowing one to provide itself with all the mineral bounties that the ocean floor has to offer.

I have ideas on technologies for under water mining, and you wouldn't really need to construct a platform or anything, just connect all the boat/structures together, then people can swim from one structure to another. If people just wanted to sit down, they could wear life preserver jackets, and just let the capacity to float take care of them.

For food people could employ aqua culture, and for hunting they could fish. They could also construct hatcheries for fish, then let the fish go out into a grazing area (the grazing area would have an overall protective net which would act as fencing, also bouys would mark that this was a restricted area for fishing boats, so they would know they'd be fired on if they started stealing fish).

Also, for city lights, bouys could be constructed that shined light.

The only thing one would really need in order to make this work permanently, would be the under water mining tech, so that one could get minerals to build more structures with, but that's just about it.

So we could construct the ocean city (or cities) and then we would have our own country/state, free from the fascist control.

What do you think?

Also, post your ideas here on how to construct an ocean civilization.

I will begin pointing out the terminal problems.

1) Massive financial, material and manpower investment required, and the return will be what?

2) I would like to see what clause you can come up with to cover every stakeholder's ass against commodity price increases over a couple of decades, and what idiots of multinational engineering conglomerates would sign it. That sort of thing makes sense for a few years for a ship, but a floating city?

3) It will belong to whom? (I'm guessing the fascist governments who could make it happen)

4) Build it where?

5) It had better be in the tropics, if people are going to be swimming around. Open water is cold. I'm talking chest-crushing, fast shallow breathing, race to see whether drowning or suffocation kills you, skull-blasting headache type of cold. People who don't respect water don't realise mortality follows a logistic curve, and deaths commence on moment of immersion.

6) Wait, all the largest shipyards are in the icy waters of the northern hemisphere.

7) You don't want anyone swimming about. Dark water + curviture of featureless metal surface in front and overhead = complete disorientation if you don't know what you're doing.

8 ) Underwater mining? As if dredging wasn't expensive enough already.

9) Fishing? Fisheries are collapsing all over the world. And reading books like the Kon-Tiki Expedition, people could be forgiven for having the impression the ocean is teeming with life just below the surface, but it isn't. Most of that expanse is as dead as the land. Is the city going to drag a massive plankton filter or something?

10) Buoys would illuminate the perimeter only.

11) Don't hear too much about that Freedom ship these days. Commodity prices sank it?

12) Japan has tried this. Not impressed. How very independent to have a floating airport.

And lastly...

Um. Look into secession.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession

It's a lot less resource intensive the "Ocean Cities".

Tell that to the Confederate Army of 1865.

I'm beginning to see a connection, or are you trying to tell Kylon something?

Is this the ocean city you are refering to? As if its being in the planning phase now. (I think)

The last news entry is from over two years ago, complaining about how they have no money and all the investors they attract turn out to be advance fee fraud scammers.

Also, this stands out in the very first paragraph:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('freedomship.com', 'T')he bolt-up construction and the unusually large amount of steel incorporated into the ship meets the design engineer's requirements for stability and structural integrity and the cost engineers requirements of "economic feasibility"

This needs to be updated to:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('freedomship.com', 'T')he bolt-up construction and the unusually large amount of steel incorporated into the ship meets the design engineer's requirements for stability and structural integrity and the cost engineers requirements of "economic lunacy"

to take into account changes in commodity prices.

He never mentioned any submarine. You can only work with what the patient says.

BTW, he doesnt want to go "back and forth" as you say. It is clear he wants to go to the ocean and stay there.

Just extending the metaphor and ok... maybe he just wants to go up & down in the sub, "Different strokes for different folks".
