An odd little experience to raise the hairs on the neck...

Unread postby Jack » Mon 23 Apr 2007, 15:23:31

I dropped by one of my favorite gun stores today to purchase some extra 40 cal. One cannot, after all, have too much of certain things.

I enter the parking lot about 12:30 - prime lunch time; and it has lots of spaces. That's odd. Usually, it's nearly full - but not today.

So, I go to the sidewalk and see at least part of the reason the parking lot is less busy - a well-known, popular (non-chain) restaurant that specialized in premium hamburgers is closed. It looks like they left rather quickly, since an advertising banner is draped forlornly across the front.

I stroll down to the gun store and make conversation. The clerk acknowledges that the restaurant shut down about a month ago but knows nothing else.

Looking around, the gun store's inventory is less than a third what it used to be. I ask about the ammunition - they have no 40 cal. None of any kind.

I thank them and depart....

I recognize that isolated anecdotal events probably shouldn't be generalized. So take all this with about 10 kilos of salt.

But...I had the strangest feeling. That the economic slowdown we've been talking about is upon us. Whether you ascribe it to a cloudy Monday, or housing-market angst, or the alignment of some planet or other is OK, I guess. But I've learned to listen to my intuition. The little man on the shoulder (figuratively speaking) who says "Watch out."

He's saying it now.

Just confirmation that one needs a 9mm, not a 40, ammo is easier to find.

Record/CD stores are closing because more and more people are now buying digital music online.

I usually buy digital music, but I bought a CD last week.... I got "Weather and Traffic" by Fountains of Wayne....it was cheaper as a CD then it would be on-line, and you get the liner notes and CD too.

Seems desperation among the streets of manhattan is up lately. More people over-stressed, flipping out. Bar business is up. Course I may be seeing more into it than there is.

I saw three white birds flying East into the sun this morning. I'm pretty sure that's a sign, too. I double-checked it by rubbing a raw egg over my head and cracking it into a glass of water, and lo and behold there were nine bubbles in the albumen. Nine people had given me the Mal Deoho!

Good thing I had my sage necklace with me today.

Something wierd is going on.....for instance, there is a rise of 44% in the number of cute, tiny and helpless pets are being abandoned in Britain this year over last year.

I feel it too, Jack. There's something big afoot. We had 2006 to get our individual "houses in order" but now the gloaming has arrived.

No, Ayoob is coherent and playful.

Look at all the mergers and acquisitions going on now, mostly by private equity and hedge funds. Some bullish bargain shopping is going on, things are either being reshuffled or scavenged, or both, can't quite tell yet. But they seem to be headed towards buying things needed to wage war. It's like there's so much liquidity around that everyone is ripe for some sort of takeover.

Well, there are a lot less illegal immigrants in the North DC suburbs compared to last year. How are my neighbors going to pay their resetting ARMs with no extra income from bunkhouse rents?

test...

My wife went to Costco a few days ago to score some fruit among other things. She returned from her mission fruitless telling me they're out of fruit!

Does this count?

Also, the FN FiveSeven is only for those who haven't heard we're past the peak of oil production.

Perhaps. The local Costco has some fresh fruits and vegetables a few days ago - but notably fewer than in years past. There was empty floor space.

And empty store shelves are supposed to be one of the indicators.

Correction:

My dear wife just read this and said, don't exaggerate' dear.

Well, I pointed out to her that I don't intentionally exaggerate anymore (Fourth Precept) so maybe I misheard her. I thought she said no more fruit, at least that's how I heard it... lol.

Apparently Costco had some fruit, but for the first time in her trips there the fruit was of such poor quality she was disappointed and didn't buy any.

She just read this and said that's accurate. In fact, that's even more of a canary in the coal mine, if you ask me.

I've been seeing more homeless people with "Need Food/Money, Help" signs on the street corners more often. Not good.
