Peak oil: the game

A world without oil, in a game
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]A San Jose designer is trying to solve a crisis before it can happen. By RANDY MYERS/MediaNews staff:
In a matter of days, gas prices will skyrocket, a dwindling food supply will rot, and the oil crisis will literally stop Americans in their tracks. How can you and your loved ones survive a crippling breakdown?

Log in to "World Without Oil," a free alternate reality game that taps our collective ingenuity to stop a plausible crisis before it happens. Or at least prepare a post-Katrina nation to deal better with a disaster. Sprung from the imagination of San Jose gamemaker Ken Eklund, the 30-day Internet game begins April 30 at http://www.worldwithoutoil.org

You had an extra period on the link there http://www.worldwithoutoil.org

I'm looking forward to a whole series of PO games. Someone else (I think cycnicalheretic) was talking about making a game based on Peak Oil also.

Just before, I saw an ad for a game called The Petroleum Wars which reeked of Peak Oil doom plotting. Twas a free online one, so I recall, but you can bet such a thing will inevitably make it mainstream when all finally see the issue.

Man, turning Peak Oil into an on-line game is just totally sick.

You really haven't figured this one out yet, have you?

Games, movies, news, it's all a reflection of what people are beginning to become concerned about.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

People have always been concerned about games, stories and news (known as gossip back in the day) and always will be.

A life only focused on survival issues is not much of a life, IMO.

Who knows, if the Chinese had Mongol simulation software they might have been able to fend off the horde. :P

In strategy simlations for oil done by policy makers there is always collapse. I doubt the game will be very good and PO occurs over decades so once things get really interesting with double digit declines around 2020 there won't be much of a game because the options will be reduced to lay down and die.

Just some thoughts.

Peak Oil is NOT a game. It's about something called 'reality'. Hello, tap-tap - is anyone 'out there' actually listening?

I see don't see any reason to be highly offended that peak oil is being made into a game. Anything that increases awareness and makes people think about alternatives is a good thing IMO.

Yo JPL-

How do children learn and practice for the roles they will have to take on in adult life?

They play.

Granted but it still is very hard to come up with a realistic game that spans decades. I doubt it will be very good.

Hi gg3

Children play best with other children - if left alone they get on great. If adults try get involved they only wreck the game (surely you must remember - grin).

I don't 'play' much with my children but I am always around for them, and I try and teach them things that will try and help them later in life. (In a fun way, of course). Today I tought my eldest daughter how to make mayonnaise - from our own home-grown eggs. She was amazed! Prior to then she thought it just something you bought in jars...

Computer games (of this type) are IMHO very sinister in that they encourage adults to regress back into childhood. Back to a time when everything is taken care of and if things go wrong, you can just wipe it over and start again.

BTW if you check my BIO you'll see I write web-based software for my living so I am entitled to have an opinion, IMHO...

Yeah, the Bible says a lot of stupid things.

Poor Puritans, actually taking that stuff seriously. :(

I'm not a Christian. But the quote stands on its own merits, IMHO, that's why I used it.

Hey, only because I could never get the hang of co-operative fighting. Plus when the power-jumps came in I thought the original 'Doom' idea had kind-of lost the plot. Now take me in on a session on the original one, mate, and you are 'toast'.

Aha! You have not put away childish things! (Although to be fair, it does have an age restriction certificate, I think).
