I'm thinking of moving to LA (but open to better ideas)

It seems like the verdict is in after just three pages....

Peak Oil will only be a disaster for LA (and other cities) if we are unable to come up with alternative energy sources to replace the oil.

Santa Monica is a wonderful town. Enjoy.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newsseeker', 'I')t seems like the verdict is in after just three pages....

It was just a passing idea. I wouldn't have probably posted it except for the timing. ;)

Besides, I wanted to hear opinions on it. And, as I supsected, there is no real evidence that shit is gonna get THAT bad, that quick. That said, it's a pretty cool community here now, working in a greenhouse and & at an inn & on some land out in the boonies. Pretty progressive little spot for Utah. Probably head back to Northern Cali when it gets cold and the business dries up for the winter. My rent here is $150 a month ($300 room split with the missus, util included), get paid $12/hour (I'll prolly get a 2nd job for variety at significantly less pay) get free wi-fi at this little bookstore/coffeeshop in town, lot of free greens from the greenhouse here, fresh local grass fed meat for my pussycats, learning constuction and growing skillz. It's a good setup for now. It'll help me be more valueble to whatever community I end up in.

Thanks for all the love! :-D

Have fun in Utah.

It can be a great place to live. I've got a friend who owns a small restaurant/inn near the little town of Boulder west of Capitol Reef and loves living in rural Utah.

If you stay through next winter the skiing is incredible .... in the summer the Mountain biking scene in the red rock country around Moab is worth checking out.

I know the matter is pretty much settled but here is something else to consider:

On the Road to Peak Oil Doom (dramatically emphasized) other natural disasters lie in wait. On the whole, I think LA will be mostly liveable in the next 5 years like other posters have noted...but there is another geological problem lurking. Earthquakes. Specifically in the LA basin. The area is over due for a big one, the last real one occuring when the place still belonged to Mexico. If an earthquake happened tomorrow or any period of time now where fuel is getting more expensive but is otherwise available, we will undoubtledly see a replay of New Orleans, post Katrina.

First of all, we have to remember that LA (and California and Nevada) are isolated from the rest of the US in terms of OIL production/importing and refining. A major shake and the rest of S. CA, S Nevada and E. Arizona are now dependent on Bay area refineries. No pipelines.... limited import options and weeks long delay to dispatch eastern refined products to the west.

This is ontop of all the rest of the problems you get after an earthquake -fires, collapsed bridges, landslides not to mention the human misery. Any one think FEMA can handle this one??

I sincerely doubt New Orleans will ever return to its pre hurricane state.

I guess my point is LA's days are numbered but and a slow but steady decline may be punctuated by a disaster that speeds up the unravelling by several orders of magnitude.

Yeah. Peak Oil, Shmeak Oil. We've got water and seismic issues that we'll probably have to deal with long before we have to abandon our beloved cars.
