"Richard McBeef", A Play by Cho Seung Hui

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('The Smoking Gun', 'V')irginia Killer's Violent Writings
Play told of pedophilic stepfather, murder of 13-year-old boy

APRIL 17--The college student responsible for yesterday's Virginia Tech slaughter was referred last year to counseling after professors became concerned about the violent nature of his writings, as evidenced in a one-act play obtained by The Smoking Gun. The play by Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old English major, was submitted last year as part of a short story writing class. Entitled "Richard McBeef," Cho's bizarre play features a 13-year-old boy who accuses his stepfather of pedophilia and murdering his father. A copy of the killer's play can be found below. The teenager talks of killing the older man and, at one point, the child's mother brandishes a chain saw at the stepfather. The play ends with the man striking the child with "a deadly blow." (10 pages)

It used to take years to get ahold of the psychotic, homocidal ravings of violent killers. Nowadays, it just takes a day or two.

Holy smokes. I remember the big hoopla when the washingtonpost published the Unibombers manifesto...

Same goes for wikipedia.

Kinda reminds me about the scene from Back to the Future II, when Marty goes forward in time to 2015 and finds out that things happen much much faster in the future, from events and gadgets to the criminal justice system.

The latter wouldnt have been the case here. If the shooter would have survived and been put on trial, it would have dragged on and on in distinct contrast with the pace of events. Plus they would have had to relocate the trial to Bora Bora or some other far off place.

It's only one very short, very poor piece of scribbling but it's a glimpse into a disturbed personality.

It just seems very, very sad to me. This was written by a 22 year old. The immaturity is striking, even more so than the anger. It doesn't appear to have any literary devices in use. It appears to be pure anger fantasy - the kind of fantasy acting-out that an angry 10-11 year old might have expressed.

Lots of people who knew him are saying that the guy was obviously disturbed. His creative writing teacher was making attempts to get him some help, but wasn't having any luck.

There will be much soul-searching and finger-pointing, as there always is when something like this happens.

EDIT:

'He Was Just Off'

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he professor reported his concerns to administrators in the English department, he says. He wasn't the first: Cho had been a topic of discussion among the faculty for some time. "He was referred by the English department to counselors," says the professor. And "according to the director of the program, the police were also notified ... It was obvious that he was troubled."
