How will say a neighbor react if he realizes that you knew about the oil peak. When he sees his children hungry and sad, might he not blame you for not warning him?

It depends on what personality type your neighbor is, as classifying all people under one blanket statement is very inaccurate at best. However, if the person in question has a habit of blaming others for his/her problems, then they will likely find you a scapegoat regarding thier troubles. However, even if you do alert them to the condition known as peak oil, chances are that you will simply be passed up on as a conspiracy theorist, or a strange environmentalist. The best option for "neighborly" relations is simply not letting them know about this issue unless they wish to bring up the issue themselves, or if you can gradually ease them into it. A good way to do this is to start off with just the basic facts first once you get a realization of where they stand on this issue.

A good way to start on a conversation is simply to ask them what thier opinion is regarding Peak Oil. If they do not know what Peak Oil is, simply tell them that it is a theory stating that global oil production will eventually reach a level of maximum output, and this will correspond to the halfway point in depletion of world oil reserves. Let them know about Hubbert's Peak, and the work that Marion King Hubbert performed during his lifetime. Simply state the bare facts that are provable at this point, such as mathematical formulas, global petroleum analysis, and respected organizational material such as the work by the IEA and USGS. If they doubt your news, it will be very simple for them to verify the accuracy themselves.

If they are not interested, simply do not peruse the subject further. If they are interested in Peak Oil Theory, the person in question will eventually seek to find out more information from you regarding the issue, or will do thier own research regarding the matter. I suggest you recommend a few sites if they are interested in the subject at hand. I would not suggest introducing them to the potential of a massive die-off until the party has gotten a grasp of the severity of the peak oil situation. If you must bring it up, only mention the biological phenomenons known as Overshoot, and sustainability. Easter Island would be a good example of this, as would bacteria in a Petri dish.

Your post seems to assume that your children will not be hungry and sad also. I hope this is the case. It may be very difficult to prevent however. Without a lot of preparation (read money) it may be very hard to position yourself to be in any better situation than your neighbor. Just having the knowledge of peak oil won’t feed you.

Having knowledge of what is coming will allow you to prepare to a limited extent.

I am looking area areas of the United States which have excess supplies of nuclear and coal for electricity. I also want an area that is a net exporter of food.

I currently live in an area of the country (North Carolina) that uses 50% nuclear and 50% coal. There is almost no natural gas or oil used in the local power grid. (Duke Power is the local utility).

I am not sure about the farming/food numbers. Havnt looked into that deeply yet.

Will this be enough? I dont know. But there is less change of major power outages here and this area is well equipped to handle a major increase in electric cars.

Link, the first rule when you correct someone’s spelling is to use the correct grammar to correct him or her:

“Learn spell it before you write of using it!!”

Naw.

So your neighbor will only starve "to a limited extent"? For you or your neighbor to survive in the worst case scenario will require quite a bit more than preparation to a "limited extent".

Missinglink,

Moderator or not, your just plain rude to preturb people based on spelling. (one lousy "S")

You must be a da#m Yankee like your protage' Webster and be fully anal about standardizing others speach.

That goes double for correcting those who know how to take care of themselves.

Long-trang / Carlos Hathcock?

I never was good about my spelling, and yes I do care, even though I hate Webster for all the trouble he caused. :D

Heck Shakespear never had to worry about it, so why should we be knocking ourselves out over spelling and grammer?

The message in the body of text is the "meat inside the bun."

As long as were making up, I'll say that I don't currently have one...but what I do have.... :D  Sides' Remington is the way to go, but mossies are great for the value.

Hey we need a section on SD to this peak oil thingee.

I've got to say

Postby Cool Hand Linc » Sat 19 Jun 2004, 23:39:16

I must say this. I am basically a 'guest' moderator. So don't hold my actions against the admin.

Sometimes I yell White Feather when at the gun range. lol Just kidding. I do admire his ability and his guts. Takes steel inside to do what must be done.

My brother is a better shot than I am. but I'm pretty good. Were talking long guns her. Yanky, heck no. Ain't no yanks around here. Were country folks. Ma don't shot to good sense her need fer glasses. But she can us a scatter gun and will do what she must. We let our sisyer think she's the best shot. She is pretty good but we just let her think she's the best.

Now with pistols. Me and my brother. Its near a dead heat. Sometimes he out shoots me, sometimes other way around. Then it depends on if were shootin them little guns or the big 1911's.

Then there's the neighbors and the cousins. Neigbhors got a new baby, He can shoot and make one hole. Wants to band up to protect the families.Been good neigbhors for years.

Yank, Heck no not here.

I apologize for calling you a Yankee doodle "dandy".

My brew:

Get yourself a Styer SBS .308, add on the 10 shot mag extension, add a good scope (burris, lepoud, Ziess etc.), some match grade ammo, and make MOA at 200 yards...makes it all too easy. (basicly a poor mans Cooper's "Scout" rifle) (can also be done w/ a Savage varminter if you have to skimp).

Peace.

Some tribes of native americans wear a white feather in their hair as a sign that they are peaceful or pacifists. so when you said white feather I assumed you were saying peace.

That aside, Onyered, just because your local utility uses coal and nuclear doesn't mean you won't run short. They are all connected to a power grid. This means they can shunt power to different areas and even out of state. After the big power outages (was it last summer?) we were all given a good picture of what happens when one generation plant goes down. How many states were affected? even right up into canada. don't count on help there dude, plant to count on yourself.

I bought a 38 caliber revolver and a shotgun (china manufacture) for Y2K. Still have them for when the cannibals start to roam. Will have bookoo food storage.
