$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pea-jay', 'I') was born between both events. I wasnt around for the first or aware of the second. You guys are my link to the past.
Glad to be a link to the past for you, PJ! (Boy, that makes me feel old at 51). Here's a little scheme I used to get around gas station lines and odd-even license plates restrictions:
During the '79 shock, I had a Datsun (Nissan) B-210, which got 35-40mpg, so I didn't need a whole lot of gas to drive into NYC for weekend partying at CBGB's or the Bottom Line. We used to get a 2 gallon gas can, park around the corner and walk up to the station. You were allowed to "cut" the line for gas cans for some reason. Two trips were quite sufficient to supply all the gas needed for the drive to the Forest Park open air drug market in Queens for "necessary supplies" and then drive into the city for some Ramones or Blondie or Dead Presidents. There was even plenty of gas left for excursions to The Nursery or other after-hours clubs, which we typically left in broad daylight the next lunchtime or so.
Ah, those were the good old days. I miss them. Far from being a bad time, to us the stagflation years were golden.
