FDA trying to regulate supplements herbs and juices as drugs

Unread postby mmasters » Sun 15 Apr 2007, 21:36:21

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') new FDA "guidance" document, published on the FDA's website, reveals plans to reclassify virtually all vitamins, supplements, herbs and even vegetable juices as FDA-regulated drugs. Massage oils and massage rocks will be classified as "medical devices" and require FDA approval. The document is called Docket No. 2006D-0480. Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration.

This is only a small part of a larger puzzle. The US is being prepared to come into compliance with a set of international guidelines called the Codex Alimentarius.

Some people are accusing these guidelines of being absolute madness. If what they say is true, it is troubling, but it's almost too far-fetched to believe. I'd like to know more, but Codex guidelines get far less media attention than peak oil.

Under these so-called "guidelines," in Germany you need a prescription to get vitamin C in anything larger than a ridiculously small dose.

And note, rocks and body oil used in massage, being regulated as medical devices.

What's up here is another step in the Big Grab by Big Pharma.

This kind of shit makes my blood boil. It's a pure case of arbitrary regulation of individual freedom "because they can."

Well here's a dirty little secret for you.

Silicon Valley runs on nutritional supplements: vitamins and herbs to keep the ol' brain running at top notch performance. Vitamin B-complex, vitamin C, ginkgo, and various other herbs and amino acids, most of which are popped as pills and capsules, and some of which are in smart drinks along with caffeine and sugar.

If FDA wants to shut down the supplement industry, they will also find that the internet and the various government agencies that depend upon it will also grind to a slow squeaking halt.

And they will also find themselves with a whole new crop of Second Amendment enthusiasts on their hands.

As for Codex, yes I'm aware of that one. And I say it's time to pull out of that, WTO, NAFTA, and all the rest of that bullshit that is giving away our sovereignty to a bunch of un-elected overseas bureaucrats. Pardon my language, but they can go f--- themselves with a cactus.

The 'codex' stuff as well as the change in vitamin/supplement status has been festering for some time. More stealth legislation. I agree with gg3, this stuff infuriates me. Sounds like if this legislation passes it would be nearly impossible to get many vitamins and plant based supplements. A lot of stuff not currently regulated would be, and I think most people would be against it if they were aware of it. Not being able to purchase an arbitrary amount of something as harmless as ascorbic acid (vitamin c) is ridiculous.

It's not clear to me based on the OP's FDA link when or even whether this legislation is pending. More bad news.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'd not heard of that.

Keep the population malnourished and sick, and they will come to you for help and give you money to ease their pain.

No big surprise here. If this comes to pass, I just hope a few heads of certain politicos and businessmen pop like ticks having a match to them.

"The hungry sheep look up, and are not fed,
But swoln with wind, and the rank mist they draw,
Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread,
Besides what the grim wolf with privy paw
Daily devours apace, and nothing said.
But that two-handed engine at the door
Stands ready to smite once, and smite no more."

I'd rather do it for them, with a razorblade. No need to violate that poor cactus like that.

Take it all away and then maybe we can get down to whats real.

Denial and rationalization folks, thats all, thats all that ever stood between us and the truth.
