I realized jericho's greatness after trying to explain this week's episode to my friend's wife:

"Ok, there's this badass black guy who kidnapped his family, and he's a terrorist who didn't complete his mission, so he has a nuke in his basement. Some fake marines came through town to steal supplies and the people in town stole their tank, and they're hiding it in a dude's barn."

It struck me as the most far-fetched thing I've ever said, but in a doomsday scenario, that kind of strange stuff will actually be happening.

Ditto. Less melodrama and more plain old fashion killing. I keep waiting for the episode where they all hold hands and sing Kumbya my Lord.

I'm suprised they haven't done this in every episode. They've come just short of it.

M.utant Z.ombie B.ikers should have dominated these Jericho pussycats a long time ago.

It was ridiculous how they got the tank "I sure as hell know my gun has bullets in it!" If I were one of those seasoned fake marines, I would have used that time the guy was saying that stupid crap to immediately shoot him! There should have been a nasty exchange of bullets in that room when the jig was up. I believe they were able to get the tank with nothing more than a butt stroke. Imagine being in that situation, what are the chances of it ending nicely with just a little violence?Yeah right! you think those battle hardened, jaded by reality, fake marines would give up their livelihoods without a fight? Being sent back out without the tools of their trade amounted to a death sentence. They did have bullets; I saw the old mayor remove some from at least one magazine.

They writers need to kill off the one guy's pregnant ex wife, the IRS agent, the new mayor, the blonde girl's fiancee who came back from the dead and all those refugees that were with him, the farmers sister's stupid new boyfriend, the dipshit that inherited the town store as well as the rich girl he has a crush on, the black guys complainer family, etc.

Jonah? (the blonde woman's father who has a compund out of town) and his gang need to take over control of the entire area and enslave the former democratic leaders if they don't toughen up.

You wouldn't have much of a show then. Hard to build sympathetic characters out of MZBs, although I'll confess to crying a bit when the Toecutter died.
I'm enjoying the show a bit more now, I think the writers were deluged with complaints about fluffy rubbish like the girls getting tipsy in the bar and having dream sequences. More Threads, less Guiding Light, thank you!

Looks like they must have been reading this thread. Bye bye doctor-wife.

I missed the last few episodes and just finished watching the last one on the CBS website. I must say that I'm enjoying the story, however improbable. Some of the drama BS is annoying, but that just gives me time to go get another beer.

Questions:
--Anyone else notice the M4s the "Marines" were carrying? Marines use the M16A3/4. Whoops.
--How about the M1 Carbine one of the wind turbine guys was carrying? Nice.
--Why oh why is everyone driving everywhere when there's a critical gas shortage?
--Why did the main farmer character go off with the wind turbine guys? Don't they need farmers to grow the much discussed next-season crop?
--Just how much booze does that damn bar have stored anyway?
--When's the outlaw permaculture episode?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'L')ooks like they must have been reading this thread. Bye bye doctor-wife.

These guys desperately need a medical consultant. A 16 week pregnancy with previa in preterm labor and bleeding all over the place is not a viable pregnancy. I don't know anyone that would use medicines to try and stop a miscarriage at 16weeks. They certainly wouldn't use ritadrine or "A 10% drip of whatever [alcohol] is coming out of the still". You might consider a single dose of terbutaline just to see if that stops things, but at that gestation, if it comes it comes. The purpose of tocolytics is to try and squeak out a few more weeks for a pregnancy so that they baby has an easier time and doesn't spend so much time in the NICU. They do NOT get you six more months of pregnancy. That baby wouldn't even be viable for another 2 months if they had a fully equipped NICU. Without a neonatal ventilator, it's probably 4 months from being viable. I don't know what sort of surgery you would even propose to try for that. If she's really bleeding that much, then you forget the fetus and try to save the mom. Personally, I'd do a D&E, but that's not something most doctors do enough to do it safely. Maybe you might do a hysterotomy to just get the fetus out of there and control the bleeding. That seems to be what he was trying to do, but he's hours into the surgery before he even gets into the uterus? Good grief! A good obstetrician can do that in 1-2 minutes.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '-')-Anyone else notice the M4s the "Marines" were carrying? Marines use the M16A3/4. Whoops.

Did I miss something or are women still not allowed in combat roles in the marine corps. They don't let women carry the radio for an infantry squad do they?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '-')-Why oh why is everyone driving everywhere when there's a critical gas shortage?

Excellent question. They gave a nod to biodiesel in the last episode. That's gotta be real popular considering that everybody is starving.

Windmills. Windmills are their plan to avoid freezing. They're going to generate enough electricity from their windmills to run electric heaters? How likely is that? If those people are that cold, there wouldn't be a tree left standing in that town.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '-')-Just how much booze does that damn bar have stored anyway?

There was a mention of a still.

I want to know how they still have flashlight batteries left.

Sounds like this week is when things start to get real. They try to kick out the refugees and bloodshed ensues.

The marines wheren't marines.

They have a still which appears to be the only thing they could figure out how to build. What they are distilling while they starve is my question.

The wind turbine was to put out 1500 watts and they want 10 of them. My living room has 3000 watts of electric heat so 2 of those and my house will stay toasty. That lighting up the hospital part was unbelievably bad.

The doctor doing the surgery was a plastic surgeon. Not sure how much is transferable between specialties when it comes to medicine. I don't want a drunk vegas refugee operating on me though.

Why did they send the owner of the largest farm away as one of the collateral guys?

Why everyone isn't packing yet is beyond me. Hopefully that kid that owns the market is going to end up in a shallow grave soon.

Yup, those marines were not marines. We can attribute all the discrepancies to that, right?

Regarding the baby, there was mention between a few characters about how the little shaver never had a chance, and they were putting on a surgical theater for moral. The act expanded to pretending that they could save the mother.

The market kid is going to get that girlfriend of his into a metric ton of trouble. What kind of doufus brings a date to a shakedown? At least he hasn’t gotten himself sold into slavery like some of his neighbors.

I don't think the girl gives a crap about her salt mine because she is a spoiled brat and taking care of her affiars would mean work/dedication. Maybe she'll give it over to the store owner and he can be economic king of the town. It sounds as if the mine has already been confiscated though.

Why did they send the owner of the largest farm away as one of the collateral guys?

Why everyone isn't packing yet is beyond me. Hopefully that kid that owns the market is going to end up in a shallow grave soon.

Yeah they would need a lot of those little windmills just to power the clinic alone.

Why do they still have a clinic? You'd think by now they would just switch to house calls like the old days?

and yeah who is going to grow the crops if they sent the farmers away?

I got the idea that the doctor was just pretending to save the baby while trying to save the mother. I think the business about the drips/drugs was just techno-babble to make them sound like real professionals ;like they do on hospital drama shows. She better be actually dead! I'll be pissed if she is alive in the next episode.

why would you even try to keep a market going in a stituation like this? It would be ludicrous. I would set up a flea type market and charge/barter for everyone to use tables (like the fair in the other town where they went to get the windmill part). I'd have the best table and drive a very hard bargain for essentials.
I'm starting to like this character the market owner more though. He seems to be one of the only residents who doesn't fuck around. It was stupid how he was nice to the rich chick even though she treated him like shit in previous episodes; and nice to the dead store owner even though she treated him like a serf..I think he is developing into a man as well as a "new man". If I were him I would be acquiring more/better weapons with his resources. He's eventually gonna need something better than a .38 snubby to continue business.

OK. That's plausible. The mom is a doc right? She should know that's the scoop. You don't save the fetus when it's 16 weeks and the mom is hemorrhaging.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')I think the business about the drips/drugs was just techno-babble to make them sound like real professionals

Maybe. They could have done the same drama trying to find her a blood donor (which she needed) instead of an alcohol drip that she didn't.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('max_power29', 'T')he doctor doing the surgery was a plastic surgeon.

Well plastic surgeons start off as general surgeons and then do a fellowship. I believe that C-Sections are a standard part of general surgery training because in small communities the general surgeon is often who ends up doing C-sections. This was just a c-section for a tiny fetus. General surgeons do tons of intraabdominal surgery. If it took him an hour just to get through the abdominal wall, he must have been drunk. That would have resembled the appendectomy scene from Spies Like Us. He made a midline incision for god's sake. There's no magic to it. You just cut with the scalpel until you see fascia. You make a little nick with the scalpel so you can get your finger inside the abdomen. Then you take a pair of scissors and cut the fascia up and down. The uterus is the big bulbous looking thing. You cut it open with the scalpel, reach your hand in, and pull out the fetus. How hard is that? Putting everything back together is the hard part.

Personally I think I would have done a D&E which would remove the fetus through the vagina. Quicker and much less risk of infection. That's not something a general surgeon would know how to do though.

Your understanding of adolescent psychology might be lacking.

He is maybe 15-16 years old and his parents just died. The only sense of stability he has in his disintegrating world is his employer, Mrs. Gracie.

You don't understand why he starts treating her like a foster mother???

And yes, he does start to get pissed at Gracie and eventually leaves her after she crosses the line and turns him into a pseudo-serf. Don't you remember that episode?

Secondly, you don't understand why he likes the attractive rich chick? You've never liked someone that doesn't like you back?

And regardless of your opinion of him, what he is doing is working.

As far as I'm concerned, that kid is the only character that makes sense!

Well, except for Gray. I'm pissed that the town let those useless bloodsucking thieving refugees stick around for so long. Keep the UChicago medical student because she has a useful skill but the rest of them...out into the cold they go.

By the way, what happened to the salt mine? Can't they try to extract a little salt and trade it for food from a neighboring town? I remember that the carnival-trading ground thingy wanted salt so why aren't they making more of an effort to get some.

I agree with everyone about the gas, they are wasting it!

I watched three episodes of this show and no more. There are too many subtle fuck-ups in the setting that it becomes unacceptable.

I could write a better show. It will be the absolute manifestation of pessimism and destruction and most importantly it would make sense! Oh wait, but it has to air on TV...my bad.

This show reminds me of MST3K's take on "Attack of the the [sic] Eye Creatures," where at the end of the movie they presented a detailed account of how the producers of the film JUST DIDN'T CARE. I'm sure the Jericho producers have received a terawatt's worth of emails and an old growth stand's worth of letters asking about things like how the townspeople look like they're fresh from Perfect Look every week even though they're running out of food. Get it straight - THEY JUST DON'T CARE.

The idea of the dead love interest wanting out of her contract hadn't occured to me. More bloodletting!
For a good laugh, hear how Van Morrison got out of his 1968 contract with Bang Records, namely by writing a whole album of completely inane songs.
