Post-peak Fire Services

Unread postby Windmills » Sun 25 Mar 2007, 11:45:20

The nursing home fire in Russia got me to thinking about all the various services that most people now take for granted. In a declining economy, I imagine that it'll be more likely that your friends and neighbors are going to be putting out fires rather than any government service. It might be a good idea to be on good terms with them.

"Last week, a fire killed 63 residents of a nursing home in a southern Russian town, where the local fire department had been disbanded. Fire crews took about an hour to get to the scene."

I'm sure we'll start to see scenes like those in Russia played out here some day soon.

Another reason why living in a small tipi/wikup/earthlodge is a good idea. Less to pay attention to, making fire more unlikely. And if it burns up, it will be more cheaply replaced.

Yeah. I'm on my local volunteer fire department. The amount of fossil fuels that get used is pretty shocking. Any time there is a medical emergency outside city limits, they now have a policy that they're automatically dispatching a helicopter to the scene, which generally also means that they're going to dispatch and entire fire department to clear an LZ. They also would dispatch first responder teams and a ground ambulance. I've literally heard them dispatch the entire armada to because someone had a headache. I've heard them dispatch two fire departments a water rescue team because a dog wandered onto a frozen river. He eventually wandered back up on the bank and they called off the responding units. Last week they actually dispatched a fire department for a cat up a tree. Blows my mind that they waste so much fuel and money on crap like that.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

Post-Peak Fire Services?

The only "service" to expect is to have your ecovillage set on fire when you refuse to pay "tax" to bands of roaming zombies.

Ahw, sorry, a doomerish lapse, I don't really believe that anymore. Used to believe it, but realized I had a problem and sought help. Forgot to take those wonderful, wonderful pills this morning.
