What do we call this era?

Was formulating a reply and got to wondering what we'll call this gas-guzzling time we live in. In the past you had your Renaissance, your Enlightenment, your Romantic era. Also, on smaller scales, your Belle Epoch. Antebellemum times. Fin de Sicle. Roaring Twenties.
Well, my vote for an apt name for the 20th/early 21st centuries is: Happy Motoring.

It will really depend on who survives to write the story.
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Gasoline Gluttons

Now, if academia dies off or is killed by mobs of urban poor (who academics champion for some reason), thus allowing obscenities to make their way into nomenclature, I think it will be called the: What The Fuck Were We Thinking era.

I like that! Our immediate era, I'd call the era is Disillusionment. When there are articles in major magazines on how richer does not mean happier, when the ethanol scam is being exposed, when Lovelock's on the front page of the Drudge Report, I think it's an apt name.

The Age of Excess, perhaps? The Motor Age?

The next one I'm not sure.

My view on THAT one differs:

The Age of Entropy
The Second Dark Age
The Age of War
Armageddon 8O

I think that you are close to the mark. Historians may view this as the age of American Imperialism or the age of American Empire, the analogy of Rome is a good example. Time will tell.

Interesting ..... since "American" can mean anywhere from just about pole to pole in the Americas, maybe they'll have to come up with some more precise name......

Ah, keep 'em coming, and don't forget those Portentous Captilizations.

"Petro-Americana," that sounds nice, like a twist on Pax Americana which I believe is a book title already.

I wonder if anyone will remember the brave souls at peakoil.com who saw the troubles ahead, the cliff we were going over, while the rest of civilization agonized over things like Wardrobe Malfunctions. And they'll wonder, yes, What The Fuck Were They Thinking? And in the case of some of our members, What The Fuck Were They Talking About?
