Rethinking buying that Suburban...

Unread postby emersonbiggins » Tue 20 Mar 2007, 13:19:03

I was reading some letters to the editor (always good for a laugh) in my local paper this week and I came along this gem (emphasis mine):

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ith the latest round of gasoline price hikes, I was surprised to see the price of E85 ( a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) also went up from $1.79 to $1.99.

What's going on here? The two shouldn't be related. What's the point of using alternative fuels if they're going to follow the price of gasoline?

Did this guy just get it, or what?

e85 is pretty big here in Minnesota. Most gas stations have a pump or two for e85, and they post the e85 prices on the price board.

The price of e85 is always--ALWAYS--40 cents less than that of unleaded gasoline. When gas was 1.89, e85 was 1.49. When it went up to 3.19 last year, e85 was 2.79. You get the idea. I've had this same conversation with people here. They tell me that e85 will be cheaper. I pointed out the 40-cent price differential to one guy I work with several months ago and told him to watch the correlation between e85 and unleaded. He hasn't argued with me since.

This same guy probably doesn't realize he's burning a third more E-85 than he would gasoline to travel the same distance.

I think one more person just got it. If there is any hope for the future, it lies with the proles, like that guy.
