It might very well be. If the US is dropped from the global economy, the rest of us might have some 10-15 years of limping on two cylinders before we go down also. And by then, the US might be in pretty sustainable shape.

The heart of the matter is this thing about charging interest. No system could be stable as long as it rely on charging interest. But I think we will have to learn that the hard way.

Maybe. If not now then it will be soon. Something has to change and someone will pay for it. I think that someone will be the American tax payer. Glad I'm not an American.

I don't see anything wrong with charging interest. It goes wrong when people start speculating. People who buy stocks should own the money they invest.

You just think anyone who says the US is a gift from God to the world is the only won who is credible and worth listening to. What are you going to do when it turns out your so-called leading economists are all demons and everything they said and did was deliberately designed to destroy you?

Americans should be frightened to death of what is about to befall them. Americans aren't use to abject poverty, at least the type they will have to endure.

The end of the United States is within view. Prepare for it instead of hiding from the reality.

The guy isn't off basis, he just hasn't had the complete picture and has cried wolf a number of times. Doesnt' mean what he's saying now is that off.

The past few weeks have been bumps and there is a monster crater coming within the next few years that will change all our lives forever.

I have been around some economists, and I do not believe they are "deliberately" trying to destroy anything. Many economists are fairly harmless, underpaid college professors, trying to explain how the world works, and should be listened to for entertainment value, kind of like one of those fortune tellers. Exception: Arthur Laffer needs to be stood on a pedestal on the corner of Wall and Broad in NYC with a dunce cap on and have tomatoes thrown at him.

I do not know how many times somebody linked to one of his pieces of "major meltdown immanent" thought-manure.

Give it a rest, will ya?

Nonetheless, his latest installment is not entirely without merit, since it does carry kernel of truth; and yes the US economy is in trouble allright.

However, the level of job losses he alleges is just crazy.

I work in the A/E/C industry and there has been some considerable slow down that will continue well into next year and maybe beyond, but not on a wholesale level.

The planners see the tides change first, since you do design and bid documentation first, of course, and I do not see an abyss a la Larouche around the corner.

So please kids, settle down the jig is not up - YET.

In closing, I feel EURIC is a true America hater and relishes the thought that the American way of life is coming to an end.

Here is some news for you buddy: "The American way of life is not negotiable" :P

poor Laffer. I have not read all his stuff, but I think his Laffer Curve gets unfairly blamed for a lot of [s]shit [/s]stuff.

Simply put he said (on the back of a cocktail napkin by the way) that there were two ways to get the same amount of tax revenue.

One was high taxes and slower growth.

The second was lower taxes and higher growth.

Call it 1Y = 0.5Y x 2

On that he was absolutely correct and deserves a Nobel prize for economics because we all know that governments cannot tax their way to prosperity.

However, like many simple ideas that have been bastardized by politicians some thought that they could/would cut taxes, increase spending and pay the difference through debt (a tax on future spending and/or fuelling inflation and/or currency devaluation).

That is a not the Laffer Curve. That is financial irresponsibility. Plain & simple!
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.
