I willingly recognize that this show could be a lot better. The forced drama is cheesy, and the musical score silly. Still, I watch it every week, as I find the premise rather interesing. There's just not enough doomer porn out there to be picky, I guess (especially if anything containing zombies is disqualified). Dammit, I even watched through "Jeremiah", and that show was just plain stupid.
I'd love to see, say, HBO take on a plausible doomer scenario and see where they'd go with it.

I lived in Riley myself. All true. Now I live near a small Georgia town,Population about 600 folks. There's 58% black,12% mexican,11% white and the remaining% is listed as'other'.That according to the town website.Pretty diverse really. The whole county has 58,000 people total.Lots of people with small gardens and a cow or some goats and chickens. That;s just how everyone has lived for decades here and it all functions pretty well.I haven't seen Jericho yet but the premise is one I've thought of many times since we are 50 milles or so from Hotlanta. My brother used to go over various scenarios like that as a kid(he is literally a genius,so it was his idea of fun)and make us all participate.I'm going to make it a point to watch the program now. Thanks for the heads up!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrairieMule', 'T')he show brought up a good point about cars made post 1991 getting their computers fried by emp pulses.

well im no mechanic but i dont take my vehicles to one either if i can at all help it. about 1991 the computers in cars did get a bit more complicated but they started using them around 1983. i would not trust any auto with an electronic ignition or fuel injection. to my knowledge emps effect resistors, capacitors etc. switches should make it through it. effects may be seen on instruments of any age, voltage and fuel guages come to mind.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'b')ut in the event of a emp pulse don't you still have to replace the cylanoid or distributor?

both of these should be ok but your mid 80s blazer probably has an ei/fi which would be fried.

i personally hate electronics on a vehicle and will not own one with it. they make the vehicle more expensive, more compicated, less reliable and well, prone to an emp event.

again im no expert, just telling what i know. if anybody has any good information i would be all ears.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('nwildmand', 't')o my knowledge emps effect resistors, capacitors etc. switches should make it through it. effects may be seen on instruments of any age, voltage and fuel guages come to mind.
EMP just basically introduces stray voltage into the circuit. The longer the wire, the higher the voltage. Electric grids, telephone lines, etc (and anything connected to them) are the hardest hit. Next in line is anything that is super sensitive to voltage anomalies....i.e. semiconductors. Resistors and capacitors aren't going to be particularly susceptible. From what I've read, the impact on cars is pretty uncertain. While the folk lore is that automotive electronics would be knocked out, in all likelyhood they would probably be spared. The metal of the car forms a faraday cage. For the same reason that persons inside cars are protected from lightning, electronics inside cars would probably be mostly spared from EMP.

If you have something that you are worried about shielding from EMP, protecting it is as simple as wrapping it securely in aluminum foil. It has to be completely surrounded by the foil. No parts or wires poking out.

Automotive electronics go back way further than 1983. I have a 76 F150 that came from the factor with an electronic ignition module. I retrofited it with points type ignition, in part out of wanting to be doubly safe from EMP.

I have to say that Jericho really improved last week. The Blackwater mercenaries (called something else on the show) and FEMA masacres were a nice touch I thought.

Anybody still speculating on what Secret Agent Man is up to? He's clearly not FBI. I'm starting to lean towards him actually being a terrorist.

I wish they would show what happens to New York when they run low on food. It would be zombie city.

Last week's episode looked like an excuse to introduce some new romantic interests. Crap.

But last night's episode exhibited some SWEET DOOMER PORN, complete with hangings, the possibility of trading sex for commodities, 6 federal governments, "the package" and the "big guy", salt as a trading commodity, and a realization that supplies are running out, but still no word on where the attack came from, except it looked like China and Germany were sending aid via airdrops.

If the show keeps moving like last night, as opposed to the "Lost" pace earlier, it could be right up doomer alley!

Yes indeed, the last episode was enjoyable in it's doomerosity - I think it was the episode I've liked best since the Pilot.

I find many of the sub-plots pretty trivial and some outright annoying, but I feel the show is at least moving in the right direction (e.g. towards more misery for everyone involved, I suppose  )

I hate Secret Agent Man. The actor is bad, and the whole story surrounding him just feels like *meh* to me

Hawkins and a bunch of other Americans each were supposed to deliver nukes to cities they were assigned to. Apparently, all or most of the nukes went off but Hawkins didn't deliver his. Instead, he went and got his wife and kids and drove his family and the nuke to Jericho.

So for some reason, a group of Americans is responsible. They showed the nuke-delivery truck people, one of which was Hawkins, meeting the week before in the episode at the end of February.

I'm pretty sure hawkins is government and he infiltrated the organization. The big man will probably be one of the 6 people trying to rule the country.

First person Dead from the cold was a good thing to see although I wonder why he didn't bother burning all of that crap in his house before he froze.

so 14 episodes in and we get our first madmax chase scene. Add in the mass migrations of freezing sheeple and I'm starting to really enjoy the show. I do wonder just how many guns they have though. two episodes in a row they've lost rifles, shotguns and handguns. I'd be out already.

At this point I've lost interest into hawkins and who caused the attacks and why. The survival aspect is getting much better.

IMO if Hawkins had any sense he would have ditched his nuke somewhere down wind of the ordered target where it would do minimal damage and let the bad guys think he tried and failed. That way he would have had nothing of value for them to come after. Too bad he didn't think of it a couple months ago.

This show is often so ridiculous. They are going hungry and they can't find any game, but they pass on a pack of wild dogs?! They burn up all of their fuel on generating electricity and driving around town like business as usual instead of saving it for farm equipment and the emergency town miltia/fire department?! They make friends with a useless sack of shit IRS agent!!!? She deserves to be chained up in that farmers basement and would best serve as the "village bicycle" for her crimes against the american people. All a bunch of rural dudes from kansas have are shotguns and pistols?? Where are all the AR-15s, FALS, and AKs?

I like the idea of the show but it is not doomerish enough and the drama is lame. They need somebody like the people that made the sopranos to do a show like this.

I want a tank in my barn too, dammit.
Ideally it would be a less thirsty piston engined one, let's say a late model Leo 2, but an M1 would do in a pinch. Not ideal for schlepping about in, but >60 tonnes imposes respect.

Anyway, do you think this barn-stored MBT will make an appearance in a later episode? Please let it be so!

The show ended with the old mayor saing something like "you never know when you'll need a tank". The morse at the start said "THEY WILL NEED IT" so I'm guessing we'll get to see some more fun tank action. Hopefully their budget is high enough we get to see it actually do more then just drive down the middle of the street.
