Come on Jack. Morphine has been around for a long time. Opium poppies will grow darn near anywhere, and it's a pretty easy conversion to morphine. Virtually every pain killer used today is some minor tweak on opium.
Likewise, surgical anesthesia dates back to the 1800's. Ether was a very easy to make and very effective anesthetic. The reason it has disappeared as a surgical anesthetic has much less to do with it's pharmacological effectiveness, than its flammability and fire danger.
