Critics hated it, but I loved Immortal. It's based on a French comic book set toward the end of this millenium, and it's about a mutant space girl who is becoming human, and has been selected by the Egyptian God Horus to be the recipient of his Seed.

Some clips are here:

I was also impressed by a Japanese film called Ikinai (literally, "not to be," but referred to most often as "Suicide Bus" in English). A bunch of Japanese, mostly businessmen on hard times, plot their own deaths aboard a tour bus, for insurance and wrongful death money.

One of the businessmen is committed to an asylum, and his ticket is taken by his cute and cheerful niece, who wonders why everyone else on the tour is so glum. First half is an amusing comedy, second halfRight now is more serious, but still rewarding.

Right now I'm midway through another Japanese film, Ritual (watching it in another window, had to pause it to write this). It's about a filmmaker who becomes obsessed by a suicidal, obsessive-compulsive girl. By just observing her and listening to her, he's become essential in her life. And now he's becoming bored...and wondering how to retreat from her life without destroying her. It's among the first of the live action features by Hideaki Anno, a widely-admired director of "anime" (Evangelion, His and Her Circumstances). His visual style is incredible.

Ok, I have a question...

Postby TWilliam » Tue 21 Dec 2004, 12:50:33

...about Buster's avatar in the post above.

I avoid TV like the plague it is, so the only time I see broadcast is when I'm in someone's home and they have it on. Can someone tell me if that is some Photoshop wizardry, or if that is an actual broadcast image?

If it's the latter... [smilie=5hot.gif]

Man, talk about some serious NLP happenin' in that one... [smilie=5hypnodisk.gif][smilie=5hypnodisk.gif][smilie=5hypnodisk.gif][smilie=5hypnodisk.gif][smilie=5hypnodisk.gif]

Apparently it worked pretty well too.

I'm currently waiting for the sequel to "battle royale" which like the original will not be released in the USA. (The content is considered to be too violent for you sensitive unspoiled American minds 8) ). Petty, I think the doomers among you will love this one.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')At the dawn of the Millenium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work, 800,000 students boycotted school. The adults lost confidence, and fearing the youth, eventually passed the 'Millenium Educational Reform Act'...AKA: The BR Act."

Battle Royale, a film by the veteran Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku, tells the story of a dystopic future in which each year, a randomly-selected 9th grade class is kidnapped and sent to a deserted island where they are equipped with weapons and are forced to kill each other until one survivor is left. The movie, which premiered in Japan on December 16, 2000 amidst much controversy, is based on a bestselling novel by Koushun Takami

12 Monkeys, The Stand, The Day After Tomorrow, Dawn Of The Dead, and that one back in the eighties The Day After. Seems like a recurring theme to me. Sorry, I realize this was supposed to be 'on the lighter side.'

Like TWilliam, I avoid TV. In fact, I give my TV away in February 2004. Have not watch a single movie since then. Only see in my friend's house. However , I read books instead.

However, I need to watch "Resident Evil" or "Biohazard" to fix my TV addiction. :? Now where is my "Resident Evil" DVD ? Hey, I already give the DVD drive to my brother. So no more movies for me unless I buy the VCD version. Need to finish the book 'Future Shock' by Alvin Toffler.

Just finish the chapter on Throw Away society. Everything is built to be throw away. Disposable dress, cars and apartments. Robots will replace human. A 17 years old boy kills himself because his father don't let him use his car after he involved in minor accident. The next chapter is about modern nomad. In the future, people commute 3 hours a day to work.

Smiley: I saw that movie! I thought it was insane at first, and I only saw the version that was in Japaneese and translated to english in captions. I diden't mind, and it was quite action packed seeing dozens of students who have grown up together duke it out to the death. Crazy stuff
