Garden Girls First Peak Oil Video Blog!

Unread postby FilmShack » Sat 10 Mar 2007, 10:45:03

Here is the first in my semi weekly Peak Oil Video blog from the set (my house) of Garden Girl. I hope you like it, leave your comments, and remember to try and do what you can do, every little bit counts!

This weeks blog is on corn and ethanol usage, and it's economic impact. Feel free to leave suggestions for future subjects as well.

Nice with some new material, and I think you are 100% right in most things you do. One little detail though: The shadow under that baseball cap make you look like some "Captain Midnight" conspiracy type hiding your eyes. And fluorescent tubes contain mercury.

Thanks for the tip on the mercury. If you had seen the bags under my eyes thanks to this crazy work schedule you wouldn't blame me for the secret agent look, over the tired raccoon look!

Thanks MacG.

Wha? Once gardening becomes a criminal activity she will fit right in and I personally cannot wait for the segment on garden camouflage, securing and trapping the perimeter 8)

I thought it was a well done short segment.
It is giving me idea's.

I agree with the others that you should lose the cap.

Your good looks are definitely an asset for promotional videos.
There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.

I personally like the cap. The shadow it casts on your pretty eyes can be eliminated by lighting from below the camera, either with reflectors or diffuse light sources easily available from a web source like Adorama.

Love your content. Will be watching for more. Go Garden Girl!

Thanks folks. I hope we can start some meaninfull dialogue. The corn thing is pretty important, no? I make the blogs at the end of the weeks shooting so I am pretty wiped out.

I have to do everything twice you see. So I set it up, take it down and then set it up on camera. So when I did that blog I was pretty haggard looking. So let me hide the eyes when I'm tired okay? Enjoy the illusion of all together.

Aaron: Did that mean you liked it?
Silent Todd: Thank you very much?
Peak Oiler: I hear ya. Just overworked and underpaid...
NEOPO:Thanks Neopo, my EcoSherpa blog has a thing on JonnyAppleseed.

So did you get the weekly show on Home and Garden Network, yet?

My wife, Cindy, absolutely loves your video and wants to see it on TV.

Me, too ...

Not yet. I'm just making it. I need to do it, TV will come when it wants to. Frankly as book and video for download, it could do some positive things. It won't be ready until late fall winter, but unlike other shows I have to work with the pace of nature. I don't fake it. Thank you for the support!

Next up is soil prep and aquaculture prep! How cool is that?SPRING!

Kudo's to you for actually having not just an idea , but the will and energy to actually turn it into something productive, I admire people that have the courage to put themselves out there to try to make a difference. One thing you said that has me slightly concerned , something to the effect that not only will it reduce your food bill but you may need it to survive someday, I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere that one person would need to farm at least one acre successfully in order to feed themselves for a year. I know from personal experience last year that my pretty good sized garden ( 1st year , some veg. success , some veg. failures)didn't come close to making a meaningful dent in the food budget of my family of four. However , with one years learning experience under my belt I'm confident this years garden will make a meaningful difference, I hope.

Hi Patty!
I love your garden blog project, as well as your other production on youtube. You are clearly a professional, and this is something I've been working on here in Chicago, with other Master Gardeners.(no, not a video, but fun, effective mass marketing skills of what WE know, and how to translate that into edible gardening skills.)

I manage a chain of garden centers in the Chicagoland area, (with some using solar power to run cash registers, etc.) I am going to tell some of my customers to watch for you on youtube and wherever else you care to plug your ideas. I know the gardening season is going to be up and running soon, so I know we'll be seeing more..? I will have to advertise your show/website on my handouts at the stores! At least Chicago will be watching you, girlfriend! ;-)

From someone who also teaches horticulture and edible landscaping.. GOOD JOB Patti!

Come to Chicago and I will take you out for some good Lechon! (no, I am not Puerto Rican, but live near a large Puerto Rican neighborhood. I am descended from Polish-American landscapers and an herbalist on one side of my family, and from the PA Dutch/Amish on the other side, I guess I am "hardwired" for this kind of work! lol)

Jboogy: Thank you very much for the comments. Last year on seven hundred square feet I did about 25 percent of the families food, but size doesn't matter, its really efficiancy that matters. For example last year I only planted new seedling three times. This year I will plant new seedlings every week, so that will greatly increase my yeilds.

This week I started heirloom celery, tomato, lettuce, eggplant, I huge number of medicinals(check out my other blogs on www.ecosherpa.com and www.groovygreen.com), but I plant new plants every week so every week during the season I will harvest more. (You also should remember, last year I did around four hundred pounds of meat and fish) This year I will crack a half a ton of meat and fish. The question for me is can I grow enough to reduce my inputs down to just hay? But we shall see, Mother Nature does her own thing we see what she blesses me with this year.

blutzen: THANK YOU SO MUCH! I need all the help I can get with this project. Please push push and push again! When I get to Chitown we can light it on fire!

Check out the Blogs,

I know you want everyone to be "okay" with the cap, but if you want to be on TV then you have to put on the best face possible. Use some kick butt under eye formula & foundation to revitalize the eyes. I'm in video and the really professional stuff is in the lighting. You need to set up the lights to eliminate the shadows - thats the difference between professional and amateur.

But keep up the good work - when I move into a t/home or house, I'll be looking at you for tips :)

Nice video with some good suggestions. That potting soil at the end brought back memories. At one time, I mixed my own potting soil mix, with some ratios from a local organic farm. I started all my own seedlings indoors. My fluorescents were much closer to my plants though. But then, mine was in the basement. Since then we moved, and I now have a smaller garden plot. But I'll be ready for the huge garden again, if need be in the future!
