I like to watch Fight Club, its a very good movie. Materialism is killing us.

I've seen Grapes of Wrath before, we had to read the book in A.P english, I would imagine the days after the post oil peak, but much worse than the great depression. I could imagine alot of people like those of the Okies in that book.

I pulled out my Escape from LA disc - great underrated movie. Lots of fun! The president twisting Bible verses to his own ends, meant to be a joke at the time, I found to be chilling, as W has done just that, and not joking. 8O

Damn, my TV just broke. :(

And this stream-of-consciousness quote from Good Will Hunting (1997), with Damon as the budding genius Will Hunting:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')size=84]Will: Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll give it a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. So I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never had a problem with get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', Send in the marines to secure the area 'cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number was called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some guy from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass. And he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile my buddy from Southie realizes the only reason he was over there was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish to scare up oil prices so they could turn a quick buck. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And naturally they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the job interviews, which sucks 'cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorroids. And meanwhile he's starvin' 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they'r servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. Why not just shoot my buddy, take his job and give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.[/size]

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE

If you can see the machines turning against humanity as a symbol to peak oil.

We do not depend on oil directly, but on the machines that serve us. In turn the machines depend on oil. The day the machines stop working is the day we've had it!

Maximum Overdrive is a movie about every human-made machines suddenly growing a conscience and turning on the humans. Funny, sad, sexy, has a bit of everything and not too much of a stretch for the topic when you think about it. It even contains beautiful interludes of music from ACDC!

My favorite all time movie is Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart. I saw that when I was a boy and I wanted to be that man with his farm, his independence, his decency, his humanity. And He saw all but ruined by the madness going on outside his idyllic farm. No emoticons available for these feelings.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
1. Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $1,129,219,252
3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) $ 968,600,000
4. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) $ 922,379,000
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) $ 921,600,000
6. Jurassic Park (1993) $ 919,700,000
7. Shrek 2 (2004) $ 880,871,036
8. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) $ 866,300,000
9. Finding Nemo (2003) $ 865,000,000
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) $ 860,700,000

')

... and the full list is here :

All-Time Worldwide Box Office

That's quite a few billions of dollars.

People would rather spend money to entertain themselves than on oh-so-boring research to try and save the world, eh? :-D

My personal top picks

1. Unforgiven
2. Goodfellas
3. Henry V (the late 90's Brannaugh version, not the horrible Olivier)
4. The Big Lebowski
5. Bourne Identity
6. Dodgeball
7. The Corporation
8. 2001 or Dr. Strangelove, either one, it's a tie
9. College Fuckfest #7
10. Ran
11. End of Suburbia gets an honorable mention

Clint Eastwood's performance in Unforgiven is Unforgettable. He was so much larger than life. I've probably seen in 30 or 40 times by now and it never gets old. Every nuance is perfect. At all times I'm transported to the 1880's in a perfect suspension of disbelief. I understand the rage and the revenge of all parties and the stained innocence each of them carry. Everybody was wronged and everybody escalated the violence until Clint came like the judgement of a vengeful god and just tore that whole town a new asshole. It flattens me every time.

Brannaugh in Henry V is just a genius. Every line... every movement... I just buy it all. I like the Crispin's Day speech, but my personal favorite is the Rape of Harfleur. He captures war in words the way the opening of Saving Private Ryan did with pictures. There's a reason people are still putting on 400 year old plays. I could almost say it's a tie with his Much Ado from the 90's as well. It was so funny!

If you don't get The Big Lebowski I can't explain it to you. Maybe you have to have lived in LA to get it, I don't know.

Dodgeball... one of the rappers takes a dodgeball to the face and he just snaps his head back so hard his hat flipflops up in the air. It just never gets old.

The Corporation left me shaking with rage. My girl works for a defense contractor, and she felt the need to explain her employment choice for at least an hour after we got out of the show. She's a woman of few words, so that was a really big deal. What a fascinating dissection of the media and the power of evil rich men.

Ran is the Japanese remake, but it's better than the original in my opinion.

Within the context of peak oil, one needs to consider many things.

For instance:
1. Levels of Government. (Federal, State, Local)
2. Go it alone, or try to find group support.
3. Historical samples of extreme disorder (The American Revolution, The Civil War, and The Great Depression).
4. The need to learn new skills that are relevant to survival and growth.

Well Folks, I think I found a good one.

"Cold Mountain"

It's prophetic. It also makes a good case for a healthy suspicion of your local government.

Oh yes Braveheart! I was very moved by that one. I especially liked the scene where the princess was whispering the vengeful truth into the ears of the dying Monarch while the most beautiful music of the soundtrack was chanting in the backgroud.
