I have a GED also, it's almost a law in the US that if you're poor, you have to settle for a GED. I liked the last year I was in high school, finally some interesting courses to take, etc. But I had to work if I was going to eat, I was dozing off in class due to malnutrition, and actually got put into some lower-IQ classes because well, due to slow but gradual starvation, my IQ was actually dropping. I realized the jobs that paid enough for me to be able to eat were all in the daytime, and high school was also in the day time, so I got the GED.
I have a photo from my high school days - arms and neck like sticks, hollow cheeks, in the 70s clothes were made for thinner people than they are now, and I still rattled around in mine.
Somehow it was all my fault too, teachers were always happy to dispense a scolding but not an extra quarter so I could buy a fucking meal.
This is why I'm eager for the Revolution - not that I think it will solve much, but Revolutions always involve lots of killing, and I look forward to that
