The Ontario government has temporarily waived some of the work rules governing truck drivers to help cope with the province's fuel supply crunch.

I think this is an interesting illustration of the skewed priorities that people and governments have.

Worker and public safety is less a priority than a tank of gas.

This little example might not seem all that big of a deal, but I think it shows what might occur if /when energy supplies become more and more scarce.

Western countries have enacted all sorts of environmental laws and regulations, and labour laws, but when push comes to shove, the environment, public safety, even human rights take a backseat to the almighty petrodollar.

People are not going to die because some gas stations are not getting their fuel fast enough. But people are going to die when these truckers fall asleep at the wheel.

Is the last 50 years of progress on environmental law, and worker safety going to go poof! at the least little disturbance in the oil supply?

It scare me to think what will happen when there is a REAL supply crunch.

Exactly. We can expect to see worker safety laws, environmental laws, and later things like child labor laws and slavery laws go by the wayside just to keep those SUVs rolling.
