Revolting story

Unread postby TheDude » Wed 28 Feb 2007, 04:23:20

Some friends of mine have a two-year old who was born seriously premature - 20 weeks, I think it was. Friends of theirs who work in hospitals were telling them a story which I was quite horrified to hear about: women smoking and drinking alcohol while pregnant - to have deliberate premature pregnancies. Why? To keep their figure. Yeah, being born early and going through horrible pain, surgery - big deal, check out my washboard ab!
I've only them to go by and Googling for terms like "women alcohol smoking premature babies figure" (no quotes, I know how Google works) didn't reveal any shocking stories. I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve these friends of mine, By The Way. They're as solid as people get, and wouldn't make something like this up. Maybe it hasn't made the news yet, but you can just imagine certain types of people opting to do such a thing. And what wonderful people they are, God help us all.

And let me tell you something: I dig your work.

Is anyone surprised by this?

If you are you then you haven't had the full tour of the depths of human nature.

Shit like this is happening all over the place. Children getting their organs harvested for international dealing etc. People being trafficked left and right. Children in the 3rd world being sold and pimped by their own parents even.

I am sure someone has smoked and drank in the hopes of having a smaller baby but it is probably not has common as something I have seen first hand a couple of times.

My cousins wife, who happens to look just like Natalie Portman but slightly taller refused to stop dieting and exercising while pregnant. The girl is nuts she was having bleeding issues and other complications and she would still work out for three hours a day.

Exercising is great early in pregnancy and can continue until very close to term, but this girl was directly told to take it easy but because she has such a screwed up self body image she would not stop. And through out the pregnancy she was dieting she would not consume the recommended number of calories.

Of course there is the other side I have seen too where women get pregnant and then use it as an excuse to have second deserts all the time. Putting on excessive amounts of weight then having a little fat baby, only to raise a little fat kid who's only exercise comes by searching for the lost tv remote.

Actually I was probably too harsh with my original post. Afterall it's different when it's someone you know and not just an article in the paper and it's more offensive because women are meant to care for their babies (social/evolutionary norm).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Eli', '
')Exercising is great early in pregnancy and can continue until very close to term

During my first pregnancy, I developed pregnancy-induced hypertension, which scared the crap out of me as I was previously very healthy. I managed the hypertension with daily rests during the afternoon and regular exercise (swimming and walking) right until term, which actually reduced the blood pressure. Most women can probably exercise moderately through pregnancy, especially if they've always been active. The woman you described, exercising vigorously and dieting through pregnancy - that's scary, and I would think it would be quite uncomfortable in the latter stages!

I have known of a couple of women having cesarean sections six weeks or so prior to term so that they can fit into a dress for an upcoming event. That's risky business.
