Extreme kite flying: 11 dead, over 100 injured

These people really know how to have a good time:

11 Dead At Pakistani Kite Festival

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops on Sunday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for the emergency services in the city of Lahore.

The festival is regularly marred by casualties caused by sharp kite strings or celebratory gunshots fired into the air. Kite flyers often use strings made of wire or coated with ground glass to try to cross and cut a rival's string or damage the other kite, often after betting on the outcome.

Fighting kites were described in a reprint book called the Boy's Book of Amusements or some damn thing, that was originally published in the late 1800s. It was a green hardcover, it describes all kinds of fun. Grind up glass, put it on the string.... .some nice drawings of knife blades mounted on a sort of weight on the string....... :o

Just like people, to take a simple, enjoyable pastime, and turn it into a competative endevour(even if it is couched in tradition, or religious significance), well no shed tear for those dead or injured folks I fear...
...well of to fly a kite, better watch out for those high tension power lines...

Don't mean to sound racist but aren't these the same folks who overload buses and trains and ferries that crash and burn because these people just don't seem to value life the same way we do in the western world?

No, those occur because they don't have enough buses, trains, etc so they have to overload or else they can't get to work and then they die. DDUUUURRR. What? You think they actually try to overload buses to make them crash?

And I'd say it's these people that know how to enjoy and live life rather than people in the Western world that sit at home all fucking day, watching TV and typing on some shit discussion board all day. Which one really values life more? The one that actually uses that life or the one that hides from it?

This is what happens when people lack automobiles and McDonalds and other more civilized ways of killing themselves.

Yeah. Wonder what happens if you dangle one of those from a kite string?

Have you ever been around lower-class Americans? The value placed on life is just about zero.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jboogy', 'r')ight on mekrob!

Uh-huh!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')olice arrested more than 700 people for using sharpened kite strings or firing guns, and seized 282 illegally held weapons during this year's festival, said Aftab Cheema, a senior Lahore police officer.

Five of those who died on Sunday were hit by stray bullets, including a 6-year-school boy who was struck in the head near his home in the city's Mazang area, Bano said.

A 16-year-old girl and a school boy, 12, died after their throats were slashed by metal kite strings in separate incidents.

Now that's what I call "enjoying life"! They're obviously much better human beings than we are!

That many us trailer-trash together in one group doing just about anything, would result in more fatalities, injuries, and illegitamate births 9 months later.

Zardoz,

You live in SC. How much CO, CO2 and other pollutants do you guys put up in the air that you breath every day from your vehicles, power plants, etc? How many deaths does that cause all because you get stuck in traffic jams, rushing back and forth between little cubicles and then get home to watch TV for hours upon hours? Wow, what a life, living like a little hermit.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mekrob', '.')..Wow, what a life...

Fine, but don't you think that this gun-infested, gory bloodbath of a "festival" is not such a good example of how other people around the world have a better way of life than so many of us?

Come on. There are far better examples than this mini-holocaust...
