I keep wondering if the price for oil on the futures market isn't predictive - i.e., traders expect oil supply and demand to remain in balance because of a recession (or worse).

The home mortgage fiasco is not secret, nor is the trade deficit, nor ever so many other things. How the stock market stays up, I simply do not know.

I think 2007-2008 will be interesting. Not in a good way.

That and the fact it's a place of last resort investment as well. If everything else fails, why not dip into the stock market?

Speaking of which, you'd think people would've bought when things were low.

We're about at the top of it. It'll keep climbing for a while yet, but not more than a year. After that, the floor will fall out as it becomes evident that things are NOT right.

There are two primary reasons the stock market stays up.

1) the presidents working group on financial markets has the federal reserve print up a bunch of fresh cash. Just fire up the printing presses or the dollar creation computers for a few minutes and voila. there you have it.

This money is then given to the working groups associates and colleauges with the stock exchanges and Mega financial firms like goldman Sachs. The freshly printed money is then used to buy up stocks en masse. the rest of the investing public notices the market being bought up and jump on the bandwagon. at this point the working group can stop buying until the next dip in the market because the market bull has taken up a momentum of its own.

The stock market always being up is purely inflationary. If you look at the averages in truly inflation adjusted terms or against gold or silver, the stock market is clearly down.

2) The money laundered from the world drug trade underground economy and other black and black ops markets (sex slaves, child porn, arms etc.) is funneled to legit investments in the legit markets.

I forgot to mention:

The third reason the stock market stays up:

3) is the constant cheerleading/propaganda from the mainstream media along with the fudged economic numbers the government puts out all the time that are always better than reality.

Even though the truth is not a secret like jack said, the sheople get all their info form the mainstream media, take it at face value and do not seek the truth.

Obviously we all ended up here at websites like this seeking the truth but we are in the (very very small) minority.

RE: THe stock market

I read out there another plausible (and very troubling) explanation: STOCK BUY-Backs and a reduction of IPOs. Simply put I read this theory on one of Bill Fleckenstein or maybe Jim Jubak's MSN columns late last year that the increase in stock buybacks and decrease in new IPOs are resulting in a limitation of stocks simply available for purchasing. A tighter supply (even of paper) will command higher prices simply because there are fewer shares for traders to be chasing.

This makes sense and is troubling too. WHy are companies buying back their shares? We know the energy firms are doing this. How about others? Why are so few new firms eager to enter the equity markets anymore? Are CEOs begining to fear the future business climate so much they are going to lengths to avoid the stockmarket and their shareholders?

I actually heard the stock buy-back theory from the mainstream media-NPR just the other day while on my way to work.

Im sure this contributes to the rise in stock prices too. Buy backs are up to historical highs lately.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Gideon', 'H')mmm. Interesting.

What is the main function of a company buying back its stock?

I am not a stock broker but my understanding is, you buy back your own stock for one of two main reasons. Short term reason, you think another company wants to do a takeover of your company, by taking your stock off the market you make it much more expensive for a hostile takeover bid to ensue. Second main reason, if you buy back your stock you give your shareholders an immediete reward of cashing out in place of the future reward of dividends down the line. Doing this is like insurance when you think you won't be able to pay future dividends, because if a dividend stock can't produce it gets dumped and the price tumbles like a boulder going down hill.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
