Subliminal Manipulation, Madison Avenue and Picasso

Postby PenultimateManStanding » Fri 17 Dec 2004, 20:07:24

I posted this link in another thread but here's a thread for the topic. We all know about the use of subliminal methods in advertising, but where did it come from? Who started this? I say it was Picasso who sarted this. Go and look at this painting http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/picasso/p-picasso.htm and you will see the most brutal and shocking use of subliminal technique you will ever see. (hint: under the table is the blade of a guillotine, look at the shapes of the lower parts of the two dresses -the purple one and the green one)

Interesting; I guess I don't perceive anything disturbing...I see the guillotine you mention, but I don't see anything wrong with the shapes.

Jack, this only illustrates how subliminal methods work. The purple dress is a scrotum, the green dress is a penis. Now do you see it?

I see...interesting. I saw an article, some years ago, on the same subject. In their example, a hand was gripping some product (cologne?), while a knife was being used to carve the wooden top of the cologne. Supposedly, the hand was photographed such that it would give the impression of a scrotum. I seem to recall that the purpose was to create emotional impact?

I just recently rented a Bill Hicks DVD. One of his routines is to blast society for complaining about pornography and drugs while rallying around beer commercials and sexy women selling products. He describes how future commercials will be nothing but a juxtaposition of porn and the name of the product.

Bill Hicks would have been a great advocate for getting the peak oil message out to the populace. May he rest in peace.

Dali is far better when it comes to subliminal messages.
And cheaper to buy, too, plus impresses the hell out of
someone asking "Is this a REAL Dali?" To me, Picasso has always
been a bit snobbish to own.

Cheers,

Sure, create an emotional impact. Tap into some primal issue, insecurity, anything to grab you. There are lots of interesting examples. One of my favorites is the brilliant idea to market tennis shoes by associating a certain shoe brand with the stinky quality of feet -not of course in a way that is consciously percieved since that wouldn't sell which is The Prime Directive in advertising. Solution: take the word REEK, split it apart and put the letters B.O. inside. Walaa! Reebok! Or how about that old Beatles tune Girl:

She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When freinds are there you feel a FOOL
When you say she's looking good
She's acts as if its understood she's COOL

All the while the boys in the backup vocals are singing

"tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit tit..." It's funny really, but they got away with it because it was brilliantly SUBLIMINAL. I tried once to see how far back this subliminal business goes. As I said, it looks to me like Picasso invented it. He was, after all, way before Dali came on the scene. Besides he was more adept at HIDING IT IN PLAIN SIGHT.

Irony! I learned the hard way that you don't use irony on kids. They don't understand it. My fifteen year old son and I laugh to this day how he told all his friends to eat the crusts on bread because that's where the vitamins are. They scoffed but he ate them because his Dad said it was so and his Dad knows everything. Have kids with me and I'll teach you everything you need to know about raising them!

Subliminal techniques, taken together, are only a subset of a large number of techniques that attempt to create emotional associations to an overt message relating to a product.

I did a google search "picasso subliminal" and came up with lots of stuff. I think that the American advertising folks learned it from him. It seems to have emerged from his cubist experiments. There is a story about him and George Braque that goes like this: Braque showed Picasso a cubist picture he had painted and Picasso said to Braque "why did you put a squirrel in this?" Braque said "what squirrel?" Picasso said "Here, right here. What's up with the squirrel?" It isn't recorded what Braque said though I imagine it was "Merde!" Braque spent days trying to get rid of the squirrel and then showed it to Picasso who said "No! Its still there!" This is something that happens when you produce abstract art - subconscious crap emerges. Picasso realized this and since he was such a brilliant malignant narcissist he used it obsessively throughout his career to make a bundle of money.
