Make sure you record it, that way if you manage to work out how to breed your kids can laugh at you.

Because I watch American Idol? And simultaneously work to reduce my driving and electric usage and gas heating? This makes me what's wrong with America? Please explain.

If that's your entire argument I would say it's not very strong.

It's entertainment. It's like watching a football game. Neither accomplishes anything, and both waste electricity. I like both, so I watch both.

This show is horrible. I agree with selling hopes of stardom...but how many idols can there be? I thought it was a one time deal, you know, Kelly Clarkson won, she's the idol, game over.

I think he was referring to the onslaught of 'low brow' entertainment or infotainment.

The fact America is always selling dreams of stardom to the herd of sheeple etc...
Crap low brow Jerry Springer programming defines America.

Name one good European film remade by Hollywood that is better than its European original...

Well he can criticize the decision to have such a show exist without such a low-blow personal attack on me because I decide to watch it.

I just like the competition I guess. I'll compare with football again...it;s not like there's anything really different about each football season. The competition just breaks down differently each time and some people like to follow how this happens. Same with American Idol.

Well, the auditions are over. And now AI is in the brutal Hollywood phase. I plan to provide weekly updates once the competition with the audience begins in a few weeks.

I don't watch American Idol, but I think that's on par with the football, or the Superbowl. Or any entertainment. It's a waste of resources, but it generates pleasure for the viewer.

The same with most TV now days.

It's low brow (pardon the derogatory cave-man reference) but it's certainly nothing new. There was the gong show in the 70's and I'm sure some other talent-search TV show like it in the 50's, a radio show before that, a carnival show before that etc etc

I saw about 5 minutes of one episode and this chick pointed out that she's a crack baby and they said she could go to hollywood. Did she make it through to the finals? Has anyone had signs saying "Go crack baby" or anything similar?

There isn't an opportunity for people to hold signs at this point. There has been no public audience until tonight. (The 3 judges control everything until we get to the top 24.) Such a sign wouldn't be allowed in the studio. And to be honest I'm a little put off by the implication...that girl's story was nothing short of tragic. I guess you think she was using the story to try and gain sympathy, but American Idol tries to use that stuff for ratings. It's not her fault.

That girl did not make the top 24.

I tried watching a few of these reality and mud-wrestling and worm-eating shows when they started cropping up. Including "American Idol."

IMO they're all crap. They manipulate shamelessly. They're cruel, stupid, greedy, and disgusting. And everything is rear-end-presentingly submissive to the commercials, which occupy at least half of the actual airtime of a given show. Christ, there's hardly anything to watch except the Prell, Toyota, and US Army recruiting spots!

Commercial television always used to have at least a few really good, funny, imaginative shows---I Love Lucy, Star Trek, Mash, Cheers, Seinfeld, etc.

Now there is nothing.

Yet another sign that our civilization is on the down escalator.

I gotta confess I've watched the special "blooper" american idol, remember william hung / "she bang she bang " , dat shit was funny! I do watch survivor and seinfeld reruns and football so I'm not sure I can claim intellectual superiority over anyone , however, if you do watch springer or nancy grace or fox news you really need to stop , take a deep breath and take a long hard look at how your spending your time . IMHO
