The squares marked A and B are the same shade of gray... really.

it looks unbelievable but it can be confirmed by covering everything but square B and the dark one right above it which is diagonal to A, and the upper corner of which is the same shade as A. This upper corner then looks just like B in the square below. Amazing but true! How the mind deceives.

Someone download it and have Photoshop assess the colors. Doesn't seem the same to me either.

wow, skeptics. See that Aaron, they don't believe you. Look folks, cover those other squares like I said, just B and the dark one right above it showing. You'll see it for yourself and you don't need no stinking photo shop analysis. Might learn something about your mind and how it's programed to operate.

I did that a long time ago. It's true, that's why you should never believe anything your senses tell you (just kidding).

Sensory illusions are immensly cool. I've worked in image processing and automated image understanding and we are so primative still. An automated system would not be fooled by the gray levels, but neither could it interpret the scene very well either. Life is all about illusions that help us survive.

It works!!! You don't need to cover no stinking square to prove it.

Just use good old MS PAINT and cut and paste samples out of square A and B and put them side by side and you will see it IS the same shade of gray.

Invert the colors and you will see they are the same.

Both squares A&B have gray level of 120 (0=black, 255=white). The letter B is slightly darker than the letter A (65 vs 80).

actually, it isn't your senses that are fooling you. the mind interprets the checkerboard pattern and assigned values to the shades based on its cognitive interpretive functions. these functions over-ride the senses. it's as if the mind is telling the eyes, "just send me the data, I'll say what it is, thank you".

I simply poked two holes in a piece of paper with a pencil. This allowed me to compare the colors without being distracted by the illusion. No software required.

why are the squares to the left and the right of square 'A' lighter than square A ? Unless all the dark squares and the lights squares are of different shade also.
