A Sign of Hope?

Unread postby cat » Tue 06 Feb 2007, 16:18:46

My child's teacher sent out a note yesterday saying that the 4th through 8th grade classes had watched the movies "An Inconvient Truth" and (suprise) "The End of Suburbia" as part of a sustainability project that the school was participating in. She thought the kids might like to discuss them with their parents. Maybe this is a sign that more people are begining to take this issue seriously and to prepare children for our future.

I'd like to say, yes. But It is really one part, too little too late and one part, throwing pearls before swine.

yes there is hope. My GF teaches 4th grade and last thursday taught about oil depletion and resource depletion to her kids. (shes been hanging with me obviously) and how their life will be dramatically different. many were discussing solutions. Very cute. However cute will not be needed. Strength in body and mind will be. legs must be strengthend. Kids must learn to walk again. The hands must be used again and the atrophy and motor skills rekindled. Yes it is a little too late. But anything to help good children adapt is helpful. Becuase it sure seems its going to be cold turkey crash course. Whoever comes out of it will live.

Actually what will happen is that alot of these kids are going to go home and tell christian conservative mommy and daddy and then mommy and daddy are going to complain to the school that the teacher is either; Satanist/terrorist/Nut Job/Anti-Bush/Anti-Christian.

She will be probably lose her job and spend the next 5 years living out of a trashcan. How's that for an Inconvient truth

Yup, I'm climbing on board the "She's gonna get her ass fired" train as well.

I applaud the efforts of the teacher, wanting to make a difference and help to prepare young minds. Unfortunately, a lot of parents will reject this information outright. Some will not object to the information as much as how it's delivered. I remember when my two eldest children watched "The End of Suburbia" (they were 18 and 13 at the time) at home. They were scared. With younger students, the material would have to be dealt with carefully, IMHO.

And there is the issue of overkill as well.

My children have heard all this from me previously, and no doubt accepted what they wanted to.

One of their teachers made my youngest watch this movie FOUR TIMES, because "it's important".

She is now sick of the entire thing. Is not interested in anything new to do about it, and just wants to talk about the latest Lost episode. :P

Not exactly the reaction one might hope for.

I decided a while ago that the less people know about the peak, the better.

We need the biggest decline possible+dumb people= huge dieoff...Best long term solution for my planet...

I think it is perfect that, the most consuming society on this planet, is also the least educated. Should equal a huge dieoff of exactly the people that need to be gone.
