I always wondered the same thing! How the hell do they do that? They have to have a special machine, which drops a cut chunk of fat in just before the lid goes on. I wonder how much that costs to have that one piece of the assembly line dedicated to the fat chunk...heh fat chunk machine :)

who was it that was doubting my googlefu?

Adding the Pork

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ave you ever wondered how that piece of pork makes it into the can? It’s done by hand. Don explained that this is one operation they’ve been unable to automate, along with scrubbing the sugar ring. Two people sit next to each other and put a piece of pork in every other can as the cans pass on a belt. On the glass jar line, one person does it.

Maybe they hire pig farmers from Vancouver BC to do the job! 8O

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') don't see any Vancouver BC pig farmers around here. Do you?

There's a bit of commotion in BC now regarding the ongoing trial of pig farmer Robert Pickton-

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')'Human meat' alert at pig farm

Officials in western Canada have warned that meat from a pig farm owned by an accused serial killer may have been contaminated with human remains.

British Columbia health officials issued an alert urging anyone who may have meat from Robert Pickton's farm near Vancouver to contact police.

Mr Pickton, 54, has been charged with 15 murders of women, most of whom were linked to Vancouver's sex trade.

Police say they have found the remains of more than 20 women at the farm.

"Cross-contamination could mean that human remains did get into or contaminate some of the pork meat," Mr Kendall added.

Bon appetit!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')here is always one piece. No more or no less.

Now I usually buy the standard 18 oz. can or 16 oz. jar (or whatever) and there is (and always has been) one piece of pork fat in the product :)

Well this time I opened a 28 oz. can. That is the big jumbo family size baby with a lot of beans but still only that one piece of pork fat. What gives?

Where is their business model? Don't they do demographics and population studies? Don't I deserve 2 chunks for my money?

I thought B&M was da' bomb. Like the Chris. yo know. Christal of beans. whaddup?

(I know. things are slow here. doin' my part and everything)

I count one piece of fat for every 50 beans, regardless of size of can. They must see you coming. Face it, this is one weird ass conspiracy to keep you from eating pork fat. It must be Muslim fanatics.

Well I don't eat it any more,
but back in the day that tiny, tasty (singular) morsel was well sought and fought for.

Whats the point of putting that one little piece in at all? I'm suprised they do it.

In order to make canned beans goods you have to add some bacon, brown sugar, onions, maybe some bar-b-q sauce yourself

I like how a certain brand of these beans were labeled "Husband Pleasin" for years.

The one day, it changed to "Appetite Pleasin"

How about manipulated housewife pleasin?

The B&M baked bean factory is in Portland, Maine. Just before the bridge on the Falmouth side. I've never been in there, but you can smell it as you drive by on the interstate. We like the brown bread. My wife sends it to her brother in San Francisco. Slice it and put it in the toaster, eat with a big pat of butter. Yum!

I agree, we need more porkfat in the big can of beans. What you need to do is to come here and go to a bean supper, or suppah. Big chunks of porkfat in a nice homemade pot of beans. Lots of different kinds of beans. Jacob's cattle, yelloweye, soldier beans, etc. It's an experience. The last one I went to was in the Athens, Maine grange. By Jeezum them beans was some ole good! And you could get yerself two hunks of salt pork with every bowl!

My wife loves BM beans, and i don't really care for them. The problem i have with most of this canned crap today, is they all use HFCS (corn syrup)...can we use real sugar? I guess not, the farm lobby has everyone by the balls.

Edit, if anyone has an excellent baked bean recipe to share, fire away..frank loves his beans :)

HFCS, yuck. Avoid it like the plague it is.

Who puts the pork fat chunk in the B&M Baked Beans?

It's like asking, "Who puts the creamy center in the middle of the Oreo?

Our Lord God in heaven, Jehovah, does, silly! 'Cause He loves us so much.

My wife's uncle used to buy beans for B&M out of Portland. He'd go all over Maine and New England buying beans. I'll bet he knew who put the porkfat chunk in them beans. Probably there are still lots of people who work the porkfat chunk line down at the factory. It sure smells good driving by on 295. You can smell the beans cooking on the highway! It's mixed with the smell of the sea, because it's right next to the bay. Very picturesque spot for a baked bean factory!
