I think I heard him say during the speech somethng about doubling the size of the SPR. Any thoughts on this?

I have been convinced for some time now that the S in SPR refers to the U.S. Military and it's ever-growing appetite and need for available oil. So, the SPR ulimately has little to do with markets and all to do with the neocon Strategy of resource mongering the world over.

Did anyone else notice the the Vice President last night? He was stoic the entire time up until the subject of energy.

Go back to about 45min into the speech. Watch Cheney right after the standing ovation when Bush proposes a 20% decrease in oil consumptuion.

Cheney gives this devilish smirk and wink to someone in the audience.

Creepy.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NEOPO', 'P')eak oil is in this pudding:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ar On Terror/Iraq: The challenge playing out across the broader Middle East is more than a military conflict – it is the
decisive ideological struggle of our time. For the safety of our people, America must succeed in Iraq, and the President
believes his new Iraq plan is the best way to succeed. Tonight, the President will propose to establish a special advisory
council on the War on Terror made up of leaders in Congress from both political parties.

Indeed.

Time and time again, Bush and Cheney have said the US must succeed in Iraq "for the safety of our people", or something to the effect of "preserving the American way of life". But they never come right out and say how oil is connected to that. Instead, they use the idea of an ideological or religious struggle or scare the American public into thinking that they are at ever-increasing risk from Middle East terrorists. How many people actually buy that?

Gawd, it doesn't seem possible, but I can guarantee that many do. Like some members of my family. [smilie=angry2.gif]

I couldn't watch it. I can't watch him any more.

I flipped over to a rerun of Dances With Wolves instead. I can learn just as much about bad acting from Kevin Costner as from the president. And no gag reflex.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Potus', 'T')onight I ask the Congress to authorize an increase in the size of our active Army and Marine Corps by 92,000 in the next five years

Where the hell is he going to find another 92,000 suckers? Oh yeah, the illegal immigrants.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Potus', 'A') second task we can take on together is to design and establish a volunteer Civilian Reserve Corps. Such a corps would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing us to hire civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them. It would give people across America who do not wear the uniform a chance to serve in the defining struggle of our time.

What the hell? I don't even know where to begin insulting this one.

US Senate panel rejects Iraq plan
Breaking news
A US Senate committee has rejected President Bush's plan to send extra troops to Iraq, passing the measure to the full Senate for a vote next week.

The Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee dismissed Mr Bush's policy as "not in the national interest" in a 12-9 vote.

It comes a day after the president gave his State of the Union address asking Congress to give it "a chance to work".

The vote is non-binding, but supporters hope it may lead Mr Bush to reconsider.

The resolution opposes Mr Bush's plan to send 21,500 additional troops to Iraq, the majority of them to violence-hit Baghdad, in an effort to improve security and end sectarian clashes.

The resolution was proposed earlier this month by three leading senators who said the plan was not in US interests, urging an early transfer of security to Iraqi leaders.

The three senators were Democrats Joseph Biden and Carl Levin, and Republican Chuck Hagel, a long-standing critic of the war.

CNN congressional correspondent Dana Bash says there are other similar measures working their way through Congress but this is the first to come to a vote.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('coyote', 'I') couldn't watch it. I can't watch him any more...

Me, too. I have exactly the same problem. I can't stand to hear his voice. No way I could ever sit there and watch The Chimp In Chief speechify for an hour or so. I'd get physically ill.

No need to, anyway. There's way more commentary and analysis on the speech available than I could ever read.

Me three, I'm an objective guy and I'll listen to most anyone, but about 10-15 minutes in I shut off the tv. All the sugar coating and playing to the audience got really tiring.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his was a tiny, tepid performance by a tiny man who is shrinking, even now, before our very eyes. Let all the gods that are or ever were be thanked that he only has one more speech to go before history swallows him, before this nation and the world is faced with the grueling challenge of cleaning up all the bloody messes he has made.

I loved it!!! I laughed through the whole thing. Everytime they stood up and clapped I hit the deck and laughed and laughed. The republicrats all cheering together to show us the sheeple that everything is under control. With special guests even. Did you see Dikemba Mutombo (sorry if I mispelled that one)? I died laughing, I thought they were gonna bring out boyz to men for the star spangled banner, but no dice. Speaking of the spr, what a horrible business man, why didn't he wait for $40 oil to lay this bombshell on the public? Oh yeah, I forgot, he is the oil company pawn, yawn.

Any predictions about how bright the sunshine is going to get tonight, and what it will do to the markets?

I get the exact same feeling watching "the president" talk as I do imagining myself on Fear Factor, lying face down in a coffin full of writhing snakes.

Am I alone in that??

When he campaigned in 2000, one of his promises was to only deploy troops when the exit strategy was obvious going in. So much for that one. Remember how we weren't going to do nation building? "I'm a uniter, not a divider," etc., etc.

Warren G. Harding look out, you have some competition.
