Downfall (USA version)

Unread postby Lokutus » Mon 15 Jan 2007, 01:48:29

Anyone see the brilliant German film Downfall about the final days of Hitler? At the point in time during which the story takes place, the German armed forces have basicaly been destroyed in all but name. There are only a few rag-tag fragments of divisions left fighting valiantly outside of Berlin to protect the capitol and Hitler. It's a given that the Russians will take the city within a few short days.

Meanwhile Hitler keeps calling meetings in his bunker where he tells his generals his newest plans for a last minute victory. He orders them to send non-existent armies and corps to attack the Russians. At first the generals try to tell him that these units no longer exist, but he doesn't hear them. After a few meetings they just keep quiet and nod their heads.

This TV appearance by Dick "darth vader" Cheney reminds me of those scenes. Listen to him explain that America has not turned against him and Georgie and that things are just fine despite the Democrat control of both houses.

This is disturbing.

For truly disturbing, did you see Bush on 60 minutes tonight? Oh dear. He said that he would proceed with his surge in Iraq, regardless of the desires of congress. This would mean that, should congress refuse further funds for the expansion of the war, he would, I guess issue an executive order for more funding. I believe this is unprecedented and either gives Bush the right to jail anyone who interferes, or on the other hand, gives congress the right and the tools to round them all up and throw THEM (neocons) in the pokey. Push really is coming to shove, here. Interesting times we live in, Lokutus. It's like a bad traffic accident, I can't take my eyes off of it and find it a bit difficult to go an entire day, or even few hours without thinking about it.

I watched the Cheney video. Frightening. Cheney frightens me. Just watching his body language and facial expressions was telling. He seemed to be constantly trying not to grimace, and there's the odd curl of the left side of his lip.

Then there was the focus of the interview. Complete tunnel vision. Never discussed - the real reasons why we're there or went there in the first place, or anything relating to the bigger picture. I liked the part where Dick was talking about the Dems not having 'a coherent withdrawl plan'. Yeah, like there's anything coherent about the invasion as things stand.

Best part of the interview was the very end. Wallace (?) asked if the Bush admin. was 'embattled' and Cheney denied it, but I swear he was blushing a little after he said this. What a liar.

Yeah it was a little surreal.

Body language can tell a lot about a person. Cheney has all the body language mannerisms of someone who is not comfortable with what he is talking about, and who is being deceptive.

Dude, that's not how it happened at all. I think you watched a bad translation of what went down. Here's what actually took place:

the comedy doesn't work. the acting is too riveting, too dramatic. That was one hell of a movie.

as for Cheney's body language, seemed normal to me. people see what they want to see.

During a propaganda tour, President Bush visits a school to explain his politics to kids. He invites the kids to ask him questions. Bobby stands up and tells him "Mr. President, I got 3 questions":
1. How come, that although the count of votes was not in your favor, you still won the election?

2. Why do you want to attack Iraq without an imminent reason?

3. Don't you also consider the bombing of Hiroshima the biggest terrorist attack of all times?

Before the president can answer, the recess bell rings, and the kids leave the room. After they came back, Bush invited them again to ask questions. Joey stands up and tells him "Mr. President, I got 5 questions":
1. How come, that although the count of votes was not in your favor, you still won the election?

2. Why do you want to attack Iraq without an imminent reason?

3. Don't you also consider the bombing of Hiroshima the biggest terrorist attack of all times?

4. Why did the recess bell ring 20 minutes early?

5. Where's Bobby?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Madpaddy', ' ')"Mr. President, I got 3 questions":
Reminds me of the school bus driver out in Washington State that got fired for flipping Bush off.

This whole war is incredibly macbre. I've been reading A Bright and Shining Lie which is a history/critique of Vietnam. I swear sometimes it's almost hard to keep straight which is which they are so similar. Reminds me of this far side cartoon: link. No matter how unsuccesfull they are, they just figure if they push a little harder that'll solve it.

I can't believe this guy has the unmitigated gall to talk about UN security council resolutions. The UN security council refused to approve this invasion. The US invaded any way in clear violation of the UN charter and international law. WMD's? Does he really think that there is anyone out there so dim witted that they've forgotten that was a total lie? I guess the interview was on fox, but still.

If there is any justice in the world, Dick will spend a decade of his life in an orange jumpsuit picking up trash off the road before he dies.
"We were standing on the edges
Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS
