A distinguished British historian was recently thrown to the ground, handcuffed, arrested, and jailed in Atlanta for committing a terrible crime against humanity, i.e., jaywalking while going to the American Historical Association conference. I'm glad to see that jaywalking is the most serious crime being committed in Atlanta. It appears the police there have completely stopped all robberies, rapes, murders, thefts, and assaults, and can now focus on major crimes like crossing the street. I can see why this guy took more than half a dozen cops to detain him. He's obviously a serious threat to public safety.

Nope, the US isn't slipping into an outright police state. Not at all. Still the land of the free, home of the brave. God Bless America!

Atlanta's a tough place to be a cop.

Looks like it's about to get a little tougher.

What a bonehead.

Now it's fair to say it's poverty which drives Atlanta's crime problem, & it's focused on impoverished South Atlanta which is predominantly black.

If we imagine this kind of poverty on a global basis it paints a pretty scary picture for an energy-poor world.

The harsh & inappropriate use of force gives us a view into the lowest common denominator of law enforcement. In Atlanta as well as many other American cities, the men & women who work in law enforcement are being increasingly brutalized by a violent & apathetic population, & they are visiting this learned brutality upon everyone else.

If the arrestee had a black beard and a turban, he'd probably be in GitMo in 5 seconds flat. This whole exercise was just a spectacle to induce fear/paranoia (works better at airports because there's a better chance of finding a middle eastern looking prop).
