Peak Oilers: what keeps you going?

Unread postby Lokutus » Sat 13 Jan 2007, 17:24:42

What stops you from losing your will to live and curling up into a ball underneath the bed?

Share your story.

What's mine? Back in 2003, after first hearing about PO, I set out to save the entire Internets on floppy disks for future generations when there is no more world wide web or email.

The toughest part of this project is estimating what percentage of the Net I've have safely archived on disk. This uncertainty adds to my sense of urgency to complete the project as quickly as possible.
What will arrive first? Peak Oil or the Second Coming? My money is now on the latter.

those disks have sharp edges, I'm sure some future hunter/gatherers will find them useful for skinning animals.

doi! you make me feel like an idiot. I've been trying to hand type everything on the Interweb in to word documents. I don't know why I didn't think of floppies.

It might make sense for the two of us to start saving the Internets from opposite ends and work towards the middle.

There will always be energy, just not as many people using it. The earths carrying capacity is estimated at 2 billion . But I think it's even less than that. The earth could probably maintain 1 billion people with its current resources.

Strange, but all my life I have lived day to day, pay-cheque to paycheque, and been basically cash and property poor. I don't worry about it too much. I enjoy my life. I have few obligations (no children or student loans or credit card debt).

I am not materialistic, really.

If anything, I look at peak-oil, global climate change, and monetary collapse as entertainment. Looking forward to seeing the elites, and the sheep they herd, run amok.

Curiosity. I want to see how things pan out. My main regret is that I wont live to be 200.

Enjoying the present keeps me going. Peak Oilers should all have a far greater appreciation than the layman for the terriffic world in which we live, for we are among the very few who hear the energy slave's voice whispering into our ears "all glory is fleeting."

Just image the drives from the servers at www.archives.org. Done and done.

Aside from watching my family grow, I'd have to say that I make a point of finding things to look forward to. Looking back, I'd say I've put this into practice for about 35 years now. It could be anything from seeing my favorite band in concert to enjoying beautiful cloud formations, walking my dog or meeting a friend for breakfast.

Something else that keeps me going is just the familiarity of this life - I really can't imagine an existence outside of this earthly body and mind, or what it could possibly look like - so I'm bent on sticking with this one for now! Every day is a gift, folks!

I'm not bothering to write anything down for future generations as I doubt the majority will of them be literate. I just envision them as hunched over beings that grunt whilst sifting through our old waste fill sites.

What keeps me going is that I see this whole thing as a big challenge, and my plans and schemes are how I am facing up to that challenge. My brain whirls and spins with formulating all these plans, then I step outside into the cool fresh air, feel the breeze on my face, and know that I am on the right track whether the effects of PO come slowly or quickly.

Regards,

L.

My crazy-timid dog, Jiffi, keeps me going. I could never desert her, the little dear.

And a 6'5" Nigerian companion.

And two octogenarian parents (or, rather, I keep them going).

And 25 acres of thorny woods.

That's it. Quite a freak show, but they're all mine.

What keeps me going is a strange faith that things will be ok. I've been peak oil aware for over 8 years now, and have been through all the stages. I am living day by day now. I used to get all freaked out about peak oil and try to tell people about it. They really didn't want to hear, but we have a group where we discuss it, and that helps a lot.

As far as I'm concerned, the human achievements of our civilization are infinite and has more than redeemed our current condition and fate. It doesn't matter if we go extinct, eternity and heaven wouldn't exist if it lasted forever.

What keeps me going? Survival instinct. That's pretty much it. Default mode is surviving from day to day. Such is an animal's life.

I agree with Loki. Fantasies aside, that's what really keeps most of us going. Our next breath and our next meal.

having a life outside of peakoil and outside of the internet is what keeps me going. i have others that count on me and i have to move foward. besides, i have been peakoil aware for 3 years now and so far nothing to major has hit me as a result of it. i know people that have been peakoil aware for 30 years...imagine if they threw their lives away being terrified of what might be!

no thanks, what will be will be, and until then, i am going to ruin today worrying about tomorrow.
