$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')N 2000, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimated that the increasing weight of passengers was costing US airlines $US343 million for the additional 1.36 billion litres of fuel required to lift the extra kilograms.

How about a politically correct term instead.

They're not "fatties". They're "Nutritional Overachievers".
Remember: 73.3% of statistics are made up
and the other 23.6% are wrong

The politically incorrect, but simple, solution is staring you right in the face at the counter: Weigh people AND bags together, and charge accordingly. Go over a certain limit, and you have to buy two seats.

Hi.
What about all the suvs, vans, and large trucks purchased and driven by and for the belligerant gluttonous egotists who populate the region between Mexico and Canada? Isn't that another cost of weight gain. Read recently that the average American man has gained about 30 pounds over the last 30 or 40 years or so from the low 160s to the low 190s.

Also consider that if we "eat oil", fatties must be consuming more than their fair share.

I completely agree... have a (low) fixed cost per ticket, then add on the weight-related costs when you get to the airport.

Thank you! I've been looking for this data for ages. A while back some famous personal trainer to the stars type emailed and had done all these calculatons for his blog on this issue but I could never find the email or his site.

In what sense would this be fair to people who have natural condition? If they can fit in one seat they don't have to buy two.

This is silly. They're not going for a balloon ride. The weight of the passengers is utterly insignificant compared to the weight of the aircraft.
