As an industry skeptic who, over the past year, has pretty much exhausted any particular basis in fact related to the "PO consequences" debate, some people ( both detractors and those who occasionally agree with me ) have questioned why I continue wasting my time hanging out here.
Well tonight the wife ran into the PERFECT example of why, as much as I figure you guys are technically wrong, I occasionally think that a good dose of economic gloom and recession among my fellow silly americans would be a good thing, and well deserved.
The wife was at the grocery store this evening, and upon walking up to the familys new hybrid vehicle, she had a heckler, standing in the doorway of his 3/4 ton Chevy monster truck, catcall her with the yell "Treehugger!".
Not being above using this particular epiphet against those who fall further into "save the planet" extremism then I consider reasonable, and hardly offended by it considering the number of times I have driven off open spacers and such who refuse to allow drilling on their property as though energy retrieval is a bad thing, it struck me as a weird subject to heckle someone over.
I did think the story is a WONDERFUL example of the American attitude towards energy and the wasting of it which requires a nice, decent sized kick in the economic teeth.
Here we have someone most vulnerable to an energy shock from the point of view that he will get kicked in the pants by $5/gal gasoline, making fun of someone trying a little bit harder than him to just not quite waste as much for a given mile of transport.
She didn't shout back at him " neocon!" or any other mildly amusing response, but the idea that somehow it was "bad" to not use a 6000 pound, 300HP device to pick up 20 pounds of groceries is indicative of why I tend towards irritation towards America for being so wildly ignorant of the consequences of its actions.
