If I have two options, one is better for me and the other is worse for me as an individual which am I going to choose?

An employer does not employ machines, he employs people with foibles, problems, gripes, greivances, hopes, ambitions etc. Am I going to employ somebody I have more empathy with rather than somebody who may be equally qualified but I know less about?

The employer has a business to run, he is not paid to be a social service.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', 'I') wanted to say that claming well this is how people are as a justification for what they do is specious also.

People "as they are" is the raw material you have to work with. The education system as it is can't cope, the current crop of politicians are totally untrustworthy, the system of laws that applies to you depends on how rich you are, and the economic system is stacked against you if you are poor. The system is creaking at it's seams and we are overcrowded, and throw in an increase of religious intollerance.

I don't see utopia happening any time in the near future, hence never.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', 'I') like your choice of pronouns there 'he'.

I am more than happy to use the term 'one' but would then risk being called pretentious.

I agree that reverse discrimination (ie. preferential hiring of 'minorities') is still discrimination and inherently negative. However in the case of the earlier overwhelming dominance of white males in all the positions of authority in western civilization, I see a period of reverse discrimination could be useful to get some of the minorities into the positions of power to show the world that they are capable of doing the jobs just as well as the white males. Personally, I think that the period of reverse discrimination should be time limited and then slowly phased out.

What I would really like to see is an anonymous system of analysis of job and course applications be implemented across government, universities and big business, so that the applicants are chosen for qualifications and experience first, while the people screening the applicants are blinded to the applicants personal and group identity. The applicants could be shortlisted anonymously and an interview with a panel only given to the shortlisted group - if interviews are still considered necessary. That way at least they'll be choosing from the best of the applicants irrespective of their 'status' in society.
Kind regards, Katkinkate
