$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'I')'ve encountered the absolute cruelest people online, who would just as soon cause one to die (suicide) and think it's funny. Truly horrible experiences. For gods sake don't reveal anything about your self, or ask any questions (seen as debating).

Maybe they're cruel because they don't see this type of communication as truly real. Maybe they see this as just a form of play---anonymous play at that.

However, whether it's real or not, I don't see it quite as blackly and bleakly as you do. I've also "met" some wonderful folks online.

Gotta take the bad with the good.

You're a crack-up, Polestar.

I'm not even going to try to tease any sense out of your post above.

As for frittering my life away online, yes, guilty as charged. I've learned a ton since I seriously started surfing about 5 years ago, but I'd have to say at least 90% of my time online has been utterly worthless. And it takes away from other activities that would be more useful and fulfilling, especially reading books. I plan on severely cutting back very soon, right after I check my email for the bazillionth time today, Google Mel Gibson's shoe size, download that latest crappy Youtube vid, and shop for junk I don't need on eBay.....
. . . right after I check . . .
Yeah, that "checking" behavior encouraged by one's Internet activity feeds straight into obsessive-compulsive disorder, of which "checking" is a cardinal sign.

It's a major reason why we're frittering our lives away online.

Gotta go now . . . to check stock quotes, e-mail, the weather, the "news," commodities prices . . .

Check, check, check!

Why all this checking? What are we anticipating so endlessly and rigorously?

Could it be . . . an answer? An answer to our loneliness, our boredom, our emptiness, our poverty, our anger?

There is no answer. But we go on checking . . . till the day we croak.

Ludi, I so enjoy your posts, but I had to do the math.
On December 4th you wrote, "If I read but don't post much I'm usually okay." This not only referred to this site but others you visit, if I'm not mistaken.
At that point I observed 5131 posts at Peak Oil. That covers the two years time (since your join date is 12/27/04).
My math averages it out to seven posts per day. If this is your only forum then I might see how that is doable but if it's not? How do you do it?
This is not a judgement but a curiosity.
Best Regards and please keep posting,
cynthia
PS I am using this time to postpone a writing deadline. But hey, I have until the 15th to submit my polished 1000 words or less piece. Hmmm.
