there is a canadian energy trust, ERF, they have no conventional hydrocarbon production

its scary

in the meantime, the population clock continues to tick
its just like time itself, it is inexoreable, it never stops
its rate of passage actually increases

the perfect storm will come when these two giant masses meet head-on

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'y')ou need to warn people.

You know P, having been here for over a year, I've done my best to warn people but they just don't want to know. Global Warming and resulting Climate Change gets a raised eyebrow and a sucking of air. But the notion that within my life time and even my Dad's (I'm 32 my dad not 60) we will see the passing of the Oil Age is incomprehensible.

I've tried to understand this, and I guess it goes back to the awareness, denial, depression, acceptance thing whatever it is. And I think the basic point is that Global Warming may change the climate but not our fundemental way of life. Having no means to power our lives is a 9.9 richter scale measuring Deep Impact scenario, on everyones lives. To the point where they will never be the same again.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'O')r offer solutions. or be an example.

Again it goes back to denial. Offering solutions to a global community that chooses to believe that if you ignore the problem then it will go away, is very difficult.

Considering that I live in a country where the Government Minister for Energy MP Malcolm Wicks, declared that the present Government doesn't see a peak in world oil production until 2030.

The Government is aware of the arguments surrounding this issue that global oil (and gas) production will one day peak, which cannot be disputed. However, we believe that such a peak is not imminent and will not be reached until some time after 2030, provided the necessary investments in expanding and replacing production capacity are made.

2030?????

Seemingly. In a world where 85mbpd consumption is the norm these days , he believes that at 400mb yield field will save us all. And in typical fashion he bangs on about how the government are implementing plans...blah blah! While in the next sentence see the Buzzard field making the UK an exporter.

YOU IDIOT Wicks. Implementing plans would mean keeping HOLD of the Oil and not SELLING IT. So we don't have the problems we will shortly be facing with the Gas supply.
THE FUTURE IS HISTORY!

Why warn people?

If people have any smegging brain cells, they would have figured it out themselves already.

And if they don't, I do not want to be the one who tells them.

One would have thought I had learned my lesson about speaking to people about Peak Oil. But no. A few days ago I had to go and open my big fat mouth and raise the issue again.

Here's what happened: After bringinging up the topic of peak oil and oil depletion with a friend he immediately exploded in a wild-eyed rant against, 1) The Oil Companies, 2) Congress, 3) environmentalists and tree huggers, and, 4) Arabs. I tried to calmly explain that oil depletion is a function of geology not geopolitics or economics but all I accomplished was to agitate him more as he shouted, 'we have oil to last hundreds of years. We're swimming in oil!!'

This guy has an above average IQ, he's well educated, and lives in the same city as me. Now he has concerns about my mental health.

Please be cautious when raising PO with people. Most will think you're crazy.

I wonder what he would've said if you'd asked him exactly where all that oil is.

"Most", huh? You're doing better than me. They all think I'm crazy except for my father-in-law, and everybody thinks he's crazy too.

Luckily they are so stupid we don't have to worry about people like yourself trying to keep average joe alive.

My doomer dial tells me that unemployment benefits, affordable utillities, pension and health insurances will all be a thing of the past in about 30 years. It's quite impressive that these indulgements made it this far.

I don't think they will entirely disappear, I just think they will be a hell of a lot smaller and a lot less people will have access to them.

I have English conversation lessons with a number of Intermediate to Advanced level students here in Warsaw, Poland. I never directly say: Peak Oil is nigh and we are all going to die.... But, I do use what is happening in the news concerning energy issues in their own country as a topic for conversation. Most of these people are director level staff or they own their own companies - in other words, they are fairly intelligent.

It is always fascinating to me to see the moment when they connect the dots regarding the potential downside of what is occuring. Of course, I have plenty of other ammo at my disposal. We can talk about global water shortages (as in fresh, drinking), GCC, the economy, etc.. They are also always interested in my somewhat jaded perception of what life is really like in the US.

At that point, I figure I've done my duty. If they want more info, I provide them with a few links and move on. Of course, given the current world situation, sooner or later we usually end up on the same topic... I'm sure I will have lots of additional material to use in the days ahead... This is so much more interesting than anything I could ever make up!

My family ALL are techno optimists...having a conversation with them has been pointless, I keep trying though...and at least some of what I say has got through. However they shut me out all too often, and that pisses me off :x Fortunately they all live in the county, so points for location.
We stand here, as the light of other days surrounds us.

I told my inlaws and my MIL gave me a face that said, "women shouldn't speak of such things" and my BIL & FIL both said, "yes, of course! Its finite...so?" And they don't research it or worry about it.

My family just thinks I'm a doomer. Any downgrade in their lifestyle would be a "doomerish" view in their eyes.

The people at work can't believe I have the energy to worry about it. But they DO forward me all the emails regarding talks, forums, etc on the subject. We work in sustainable transportation so everyone here gets it - they just have apathy about what to do. We get ppl out of their cars and on bicycles, buses & sidewalks. What more do can they do, right?

I think the idea of warning people about PO now is very naive.

If Saudi Arabia has already peaked it is already over folks.

Warning someone now about PO is akin to saying "look out their is a freight train that is going to kill us both!" Splat!

Unless you are living on a collective that has not talked to the outside world in over a year you are pretty much screwed. Even the people who are semi off the grid will be worse off than they used to be.

I think I may have messed up a little in my attempts at telling people about Peak Oil.

One person agrees that Peak Oil is a serious issue, but only for the USA, not for New Zealand.

Another friend was at first receptive to my warnings on Peak Oil, agreed that it was a serious problem, and followed my advice in looking on the internet to find out more about it. The next time we met, he had decided that it was nothing to be concerned about because he had read about "reserve growth" and the idea of oil fields constantly replenishing themselves. He also expressed confidence that technology would save the day, even though I pointed out that we do not have the time, money, or other resources required to develop and move to other technologies or energy sources to a sufficient degree to remove Peak Oil as a threat within a short enough period of time before the effects of Peak Oil become noticeable.

Perhaps I should enrol in Teachers Training College before I try to tell anyone else about the perils of Peak Oil.

It sure is amazing how many smart people are so far out to lunch on the topic of PO and GW. I just can't believe that people can live these lazy, unbelievably wasteful lives and not feel bad about it. It sure is painful to be watching the planet and human civilization heading so brainlessly into the toilet. Yet, everybody claims to so greatly love their children, grandchildren, etc. but have no drive to even research these huge problems. Keep consuming like there's no tomorrow and destroy their future, what a sign of affection! But I'm the mean, stingy one because I don't want to adhere to the consumption mania. WTF?

I talked to a guy who is very intelligent about the peak oil problem. He responded that he had heard of a car developed by GM that runs on seawater. They just won't let us have it. I didn't know what to say. Should I refute it? Get into a big discussion? I realized that many otherwise very smart people don't have a clue. Maybe it's a good thing. I have a very hard time making people aware of Peak Oil and it's ramifications.

I never talk about peak oil.
Instead i say that price of oil is going to increase 30 % every year because of India and China.
Everyone accepts it that way.
Give to people something they can understand like 1 billion chinese want cars ...

People understand about the rise of China. It is in the news.
Depletion is NOT in the news.
As a result advise them to buy a small car , smaller house consume less .

So in short.
No depletion.
It is the bad bad chinese ..... that want to steal our oil from middle east
It works ...
