And I feel sorry for the teenagers, who have not had time to achieve any sort of independence from the mainstream umbilical cord, and whose lives as a result may be so rudely and prematurely ended . . .

I think that us middle aged people will not be in very good shape when the umbilical cord is cut. We are the ones who are invested so heavily in this reality. Teenagers may be able to adjust to the new reality more easliy. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

If I had to do it again, I'd get a more down to reality trades skill job. Electrician, plumber, carpenter, mabye bicycle mechanic. These jobs you can do anywhere, and maybe you'll have to be flexible as to where you live.
If we do get into true global warming, maybe you'll be up north, otherwise to save energy, going south may be your best bet.
By the way, back in the day, we felt pissed off too at being dealt the Vietnam War card.
So many are so gloomy here, but lets remember that humans survived, and enjoyed life, a long time with minimal petroleum, and it looks like in the logner run, they'll learn to do it again. Not that long ago really, my grandfather as a youth experienced little of the petroleum lifestyle. Got his first car in 1924 at the age of 33. Did he enjoy life before that? Sure he did. North American people, except some Indians, did not live in huts before 1910.

It depends on what that "new reality" consists of. My belief is that MOST of us are headed for the ash heap, and that the Grim Reaper will be pretty much an equal-opportunity type.
Middle-agers may have a few advantages, though. Like experience and knowledge. Many have come through tough times in the past. Many have assets they can fall back on. Some have country places and country skills. Some are even in pretty good shape and could out-pushup today's typical teenager.
Also, life-spans will fall, precipitously. In the future, middle age may be a rare achievement.
