Neopo, I know this is a big issue for you, but you're missing a small piece of the puzzle that changes an aweful lot.
Congress retains, and always has retained the authority to print US dollars, with or without the consent of the Federal Reserve Bank. Congress doesn't want to go there because the Fed is doing such a fabulous job at keeping the dollar on top of pile; but if the Fed screws up, congress can print a bajillion dollars in a heartbeat.
