Did I miss something? You asked for the literary reference where Goldstein came from. Emmanuel Goldstein is the character in 1984. That's the answer.

My thought exactly, earlier today. I try not to read anything more than once, the get-to list of first reads is way too long. This one might be worth spending an exception.
