Geologist: Earth has lots and lots of oil
SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A University of Washington economic geologist says there is lots of crude oil left for human use.

Eric Cheney said Friday in a news release that changing economics, technological advances and efforts such as recycling and substitution make the world's mineral resources virtually infinite.

For instance, oil deposits unreachable 40 years ago can be tapped using improved technology, and oil once too costly to extract from tar sands, organic matter or coal is now worth manufacturing. Though some resources might be costlier now, they still are needed.

It got posted to Digg and to my surprise all the comments were to the effect that the problem was that we were running out of cheap oil... wow that threw me back because... um that's the problem and it seems people are starting to figure that out now. Totally lost of course on this "Cheney" that seems it's no problem.

Despite Popular Belief, The World Is Not Running Out Of Oil, Scientist Says

economic geologist wtf is that? ;-)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')The most common question I get is, 'When are we going to run out of oil.' The correct response is, 'Never,'" said Eric Cheney. "It might be a heck of a lot more expensive than it is now, but there will always be some oil available at a price, perhaps $10 to $100 a gallon."

bwahahahahah ready for $100 a gallon bitches?!?!
but dont worry cause we will never run out...........

Thank you Guest for posting this as news ;-)

Yes, after the currencies of the world collapse, there will always be some oil that can be bought with enough gold bars.

Duuuurrrr. Thanks for the news. "Lots and Lots" is pretty vague and doesn't show the magnitude of the demand either. I suppose I could say we use "lots and lots" of oil every second and therefore we are so totally and uterally doomed.

Why do we waste our time on these fools? They aren't even funny any more.

In the new novel The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, the main characters stumble upon an unused bomb shelter with some kruggerands. They're totally uninterested but, starving as they are, they make a beeline for the canned peaches.

thats pretty dismissive.

Essentially what you're saying is that the only end result is what you think the end result should be, and nothing else should change that. \

Obviously, you want human kind to fall into a shithole.

Then why hasn't the USA produced more oil per day than in 1970?

What the hell are you talking about? I don't control or have any influence on the end result. The end result is a slowing down in production of oil until it ultimately hits zero either because we run out of oil or it's too expensive or we've found replacements.

I just wish "experts" wouldn't try to fool us by saying there's "lots and lots" of oil when that is completely vague, manipulative and does not address the full matter at hand.

I would not put much store in this statement...the gentleman in question is and economic geologist which means mineral geologist in the parlance of the business...ergo he knows squat about petroleum resources. Also note the University of Washington, though a nice campus and no doubt well known for certain areas of research is underwhelming in terms of its petroleum sciences programs...i.e. none as far as I know.

Let's see now: 42 gallons in a barrel, so I guess that means he's saying that we'll always be able to get some crude if the price goes to $4,200 a barrel.

Who can argue with that? He's right.

Why is it that every person who comes around saying oil is not going to run out doesn't deal with facts but uses a diversionary tactic by talking about other resources (oil deposits unreachable 40 years ago can be tapped today using improved technology, and oil once too costly to extract from tar sands, organic matter or coal is now worth manufacturing. Though some resources might be costlier now, they still are needed.)

why are they not willing to deal with EROI and admit that cheap oil really is over?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')e believes that popular but misguided notions about mineral resources might be hampering students from entering the field.

This is what its really about in my oppinion. His job isn't secure unless he has minions to train in a resource sector that is dying like dinosaurs.

I am merging this with the other thread about this.

Mr Eric Cheney : I've got US$402b now as a king of <insert country here>. Can you help me find them so that I can get them and refine them and give them to my people at $0.15 / gallon? Thanks.
