$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('evilmonkeyspanker', 'I')f they set off a nuke we will end up going to war with them.

Show of hands: who thinks this is true? BTW I'm not disagreeing with you outright, (although I kinda think the answer is no), I'm just genuinely curious about the opinion of this board.

I think it might be in everyone's (China, Russia, US) to claim it was a subcritical dud; just like we did with Pakistan; and then resume ignoring them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', '.').. If they used a weapon, China would splat them like an annoying bug. They're a nuthin with a megaphone...

Not so fast. He does not have to to drop the bomb on anyone. A successful test would be proof that he has nukes and if he has them he always could sell the nukes to someone. Even the smallest threat to sell them lets say to Al Quaida is enough to get what he wants.

I know thats the way we see the world... Do you think that China would be particularly excited about some Turkeman getting that much closer to getting their hands on a nuke? We don't give it a second though, China just looks like China, and has for most of our lifetimes... To them however, uniting China, including its outlying regions is a big, big deal. Unfortunately, alot of non-Han in the West aren't too keen about the prospects. A nuke might go a long way towards getting them concessions from Beijing, or so they might think.

*note new nick... I think its better than rwthasplat.
Yes, we are. As we are.

China would not tolerate NK selling a nuke anywhere, and I think they have the means to prevent it.

No more talks with North Korea. If it was up to me I would pre-emptively nuke that bastard right now.

Loose nukes in NK are one more potential source for that van packed terror nuke that is going to get Jerusalem. Meaning the chances of such a thing happening go up with this, but that situation is also far more complicated than mere supply.

This is probably not yet something for the world to worry about. This weapon was probably far too big to mount onto any missile that the NKs have. If it were small enough to fit they would most likely have put it down a drill hole rather than into a mine shaft. How long it will take them to modernize their stockpile is anybody's guess. Once they do, however they will be off-limits. There is too much sea to cross in order to be effective from the air against NK, that is and keep aircraft carriers a safe distance from several mile blast walls. Also, Japan will be at risk when NK really can mount a credible threat.

Yes, the invasion window is narrow. No, it wouldn't either be worth it (Kim will probably die before they can weaponize their nukes) or easy. Georgie boy does need a distraction, from his other wars, and I have heard a lot of people saying that although they thought Iraq wasn't justified this would be.

I guess the real question to ask is, what does the law of unintended consequences have to say about this? What would a reunited Korea mean to the rest of Asia? Would a reunited Korea stay an ally of the US or would it gravitate towards the Chinese sphere as China matures into a first class country?

Rather impractical what with setting off a general regional war and all don't you think? China and Russia both border on the DPRK, and Japan is down wind where any fallout is liable to spread.

Who cares about North Korean nukes?

Let him whine and moan and make demands.

He has no intention of harming an American citizen and we have no intention of harming a North Korean.

Kim wants money and food aid.

We want him to leave us alone.

We give him money and food aid, he leaves us alone for another couple of years.

It costs us, what, a couple hundred million a year to shut this guy up?

I'm willing to fork over the cash, what about you? (About $1 per US citizen per year).

The alternative is that this guy invades South Korea, kills a bunch of US soldiers and innocent Korean civilians, and then we kill every living thing north of the 38th parallel. And no one wants that.

Personally, I'm willing to purchase all of his nuclear weapons in order to buy peace and quiet for another decade. I'm usually not a big fan of appeasement, but in this case, we clearly know what he's after and it's not global domination.

I agree.

Except that I would add that this is a problem for Greater East Asia to resolve. Why should we get involved in their corner of the planet.

I DO think that the Bush Administration is sorely lacking in diplomatic genius. And there ARE people who have very significant diplomatic talents and abilities. We need people like that to engage China in a continual ongoing dialog about a number of important subjects, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, energy and environment are three that immediately spring to mind.

I share the opinion that the objective of the Bush Administration in Iraq was to control the distribution of energy supplies from Central Asia and Iraq so that, among many other things, we might gain tremendous leverage over the China's policies and economic development. It looks like that plan is not going to be as successful as envisioned. China seems to recognize the quandry the US is in and has made overtures that it wishes to cooperate with America and other in an Energy cImporting Countries-type alliance. It looks like right now, the US is in the midst of a foreign policy change, moving away from unilateralism. We'll see.

But engaging China, Japan and South Korea in non-proliferation talks using energy access cooperation as contract consideration seems like a winning plan to me. Those countries need energy supplies badly - badly enough to exert lots of pressure on NK if that country's nuclear development were impinging upon international energy agreements.

But like I said, this is a job for diplomatic and foreign policy geniuses with superb negotiating strategies and skills. We don't have geniuses in office right now.

Just thinking about Tokyo being incinerated by a hick from NK puts them in a really bad mood.
