Twenty years ago my dad invited some hippie friends he knew from the Houston Sierra club up to camp out on our pond. Couple hours later we found them in their VW bus afraid to come out because it was breeding season for the water moccasins. They get territorial and will chase any human they see. They ended up in a motel in town. Cottonmouths can't distigush the rancher from hippies.

What about the mad cow disease? It makes sense if the job of the government is to protect health and welfare, etc.

There was a big fight here in Texas this year between the ranchers and the US Dept of Agriculture. I think it's because the cattle market has not been dominated like poultry is by Tyson and Pilgrims Pride. Besides eating, mooing and crapping bulls like to make sweet cow love to a ratio of 1 bull for 20 hefers. Thus the herd increases with little calves. It's been said that chipping will add a extra cost layer that has no benefit other than the give the goverment a more accurate way to tax the rancher. The proposed fines are somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 a day for non-compliance.

Mad cow disease is the excuse for the goverment to add another level of bureaucracy. Any rancher worth their salt would put down a sick contagious cow and quarantine the herd. Just like Martin Landau did on Rawhide. A rancher makes $50,000-negative equity a year in salary. Doesn't exactly give him deep pockets to fight the dept of agriculture. The winners are Applied digital solutions and their stockholders(Like former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson who is now a principle shareholder) and the government for income.

Gatorade helps cows out in extreme drought conditions and Salt licks give vitamins and minerals for growth. In fact cows like salt so much it's not uncommon to see them licking the paint off of cars and trucks.

I agree up to point in what your saying PMS.

Key thing to remember is to ask how will peakoil effect the cattle industry in the near future. Say you live in Dallas and buy your hamburger patties at Wal-Mart. That beef probably came from a processing plant in Kansas City and god knows if the meat contains steroids. On top of that the meat has to be trucked 500mi south.

Both my father and I are of the same opinion in the near future (5-10 years) it will be more attractive and cost effective for consumers to get food locally from say a local butcher vs WalMart(remember in Peakoil Walmart will not have it's distribution advantage it enjoys now)and know it's more organic than eating hotdog made from the ass end of a frankencow.

We are working on the theory that on a more primary level, people like to eat more than drive a SUV.
