...well banning.

Did I get some "super" education by accident?

WTF?

I weep for the future.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his story is little different. Diana Verm, a student at Caney Creek High School in Houston, Texas was assigned a book to read. She was bothered by some of the language in it, so she brought her concerns to her father, Alton. Her father concurred (though he never read the book), and so last week he filed a "Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Materials" with the school district to have the book removed from the curriculum.
Turns out the Verms should have read the book first, and maybe paid attention to the date. You see, last week was Banned Books Week, a week in which the ALA celebrates the first amendment and cautions against the dangers of banning books. As though that weren't amusing enough, this particular book: Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

Some people are just stupid. Here is a novel concept; if you don't like the book, then don't read it. Sounds simple to me.

I guess this means they won't like my new novel:

Fahrenheit 1600

I named it after the temp at which morons burn.

When I first read the post I thought WTF is Fahrenheit 451? This is what wiki had to say:

America which has turned hedonistic and rabidly anti-intellectual, accompanied by the complete abandonment of self-control. At this point, books have been made obsolete due to the increasingly frenetic pace of life and the ever-shortening attention span of the common man — nobody has "time" to read anymore, and possession of books has been forbidden; the minimum punishment is confinement in a mental hospital and having one's house, books and all, burnt by "firemen"; and the maximum, is immediate death. Authors of books have been sentenced to death at the same time. In the government's, and consequently the society's, opinion books contain problems and conflicting theories causing people to be anxious, sad, or angry, and are disruptive to society and full of nonsense. That is what the government wants to prevent, because those feelings could cause the country to go unstable and possibly, the entire human civilization would collapse. The ideas in books are considered heresy to the point that they are burned and destroyed whenever discovered.

I've heard only about 20% of Americans read books.

The greatest threat to the human race is ignorance.

At my school, only the children who were in the "gifted" program go to read that book... they felt it was too much for the others.
:-x

They honestly do not put enough faith in the children.

The only books I can remember is : How To Kill A Mocking Bird and Of Mice and Men. I think how to kill a mocking bird was about some black guy or something about some kind of murder or something of that sort. As for Mice and Men I remember the normal guy murders the stupid guy to save him from being murdered by an angry mob, because the stupid guy murdered some little girl. What else did they make us read that I really didnt pay attention to...........Ann Frank.....I forgot. BUT THEY DIDNT MAKE US READ 1984 or Fahrenheit 541!

There have been some pretty heavy messages left from the past in novels. People who never have read anything of it are what we call uneducated.

Books I remember that were required: To kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men and The Catcher in the Rye. I remember liking all of the except CIR. For some reason I loath the main character and still have and urge to kill him and the author.

Not knowing Fahrenheit 451 is bad enough. You know Francois Truffaut (I hear you asking: who the hell is Francois Truffaut) made a movie out of it for people who do not read. Oskar Werner played Guy Monday. Great movie.

I still prefer reading books (average 3 a week). But I make my living out of writing...

PS: I feel really old now. Books, directors and actors I quote are already unknown to the generation around me. But I'm not old enough not to know Eminem, 2pac, 50Cent, wutang etc ...

My generation is actively discouraged from thinking in our public schools. It's quite sad, really.

I remember in high school civics class how they taught that the unalienable rights listed in the Declaration of Independence were "Life, Liberty, and Property". I knew it was "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness", mentioned it out loud, and was reprimanded for it.

There are cases where kids were punished for mentioning many instances in which white settlers drove indians off of their land. Some schools actually teach that those lands were mostly empty when the Europeans came, as if to brush an unpleasant piece of history under the rug.

It's not exactly this generation's fault they're so damned stupid as intelligence and critical thinking are characteristics that are actively punished by those older generations within our system of education.

Little surprise that kids, having few places to constructively put their mental energy without merely acting and jumping through useless hoops and having much emotional stress from being bullied, decide to shoot up their school. Then the guns get blamed, the video games get blamed, and the music gets blamed. If politicians want to know the real root cause, they need only look in a mirror to find it.
The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the old growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder. ~Thomas Jefferson

"Life, Liberty, and Property" is the way Locke wrote it. "Property" got changed to the "Pursuit of Happiness" for our Declaration. Basically meant the same thing, but I'm amazed your teachers got it wrong.
