Nah. I'm just curious if St. Louis is nuked in that show's storyline.

In real life, I intend to get me a place out in the boonies somewhere. Living in the city itself is just asking for your civil liberties to be considered void.

It comes from the same word root from which 'furnish' derives. Original use from crafts, adapted to mean the outward or superficial appearance of something either tangible or abstract.

Veneer is a very thin layer of attractive wood glued on top of cheap wood/particle board furniture to make it look classy and expensive. If the glue comes loose or the surface is scratched it peels off revealing the ugly material just under the surface.

Thats the story he's giving but really how many ex cops

- know morse code
- can repair an old shortwave radio
- can then tune that radio correctly
- keeps information to himself and by the sounds of his wife does it reguarly
- knows a crap load about everything nuclear related thanks to "9-11 training"

As far as I can tell Jericho is about where Oakley KS is in the real world Jericho? (mapquest)

I know a crapload about nuclear things and I have had no post 9-11 training, all it takes is interest and looking stuff up. Same goes for tuning a ham radio, all you do is turn the dials. As for repairing it, we learned that in an electronics class (testing circuts and then fixing the bad ones) it isn't rocket science fer crying out loud it is 1920's technology.

I think he was in special forces, when he left the military he got a job as a cop, then when he heard through his old buddies that something bad was coming he pulled his family out to a sagfe location. But thats just me guessing, YMMV.

Oh yeah, as for moris code, I am 39 and when I was a kid we had walky talkies with moris code keys on them so you could play secret agent. All I remember now is SOS, but its not hard to learn the whole thing I did it at 8 or 10 years old in a week. Being a fam of shortwave radio anyone could brush up on the skill because messages still get transmitted that way all the time.

Is it really possible to view an intact mushroom cloud from 200 miles away over mountains?

Actually, it's not possible!

I did a little trigonometry and determined that someone looking in the direction of Denver would actually be looking 10 miles into the stratosphere.

So yeah, he couldn't see the nuclear explosion. Nuclear bombs to the best of my knowledge don't produce mushroom clouds 10 miles away.

Even if the ground was completely flat, the horizon would cover up virtually all of cloud.

Actually as someone pointed out in the Usenet, Denver is at the edge of the mountains on the very first upslope of the rockies. Driving that 200 miles you are in a gradual rise from about 1100 feet to 5200 feet.

The mountains you see on the TV show are because they are filming in CA with the Sierra Nevada's or some such as backdrop, Hollywood isn't going to bother with minor details like the fact that no mountain ranges are visible from Kansas.

Actually a mushroom cloud can easily rise 52000 feet up (10 miles) my problem is, even if the cloud is say 5 miles in diameter from 200 miles out it is going to look like a button mushroom at your feet, not a hand sized object at all.

I agree on the mushroom cloud thing. To me it looks like the cloud was in the neighborhood of 20-30 miles away. At the distance they are talking about in the show, you might see the flash if you were out during the daylight for just a moment. After that you wouldn't see anything. The fallout would reach the area in 4-6 hours taking into account average winds.

Another aspect of the fallout to consider is whether it was an airburst or groundburst. An airburst creates far less fallout other than the particles from the ensuing firestorm and the cloud itself which is usally relatively small. If you blow one up on or just under ground or water, it's a whole different ballgame.

According to the latest episode the Denver mushroom cloud climbed to 16 km, just over 52,000 feet. You simply wouldn;t see much of that from 250 miles away!

Jericho has been picked up for the full 22 episodes by CBS so at least some of you must still be watching;)

I keep waiting for the shoe to drop, at least now we have seen radiation killed civilians which they had avoided up until now. Starting to seem more realistic to me, for a TV show.

I happen to like it.

The black cop(?) is a very interesting character.

And we do have the mayor's son telling people to take away support from the hopeless cases, so POers still have a guy they can relate to. :)

It's Shep Cale. Are you perhaps unfamiliar with a little website called the The Internet Movie Database (IMDb)? It's has every film or TV show under the sun listed in there, even Jericho.
I watch faithfully but want more doom, despair, and the like. I think Hawkins (black guy) is AWOL from the military, myself. There's a Jericho Forum, one participant's a knowledgable ex-military type.
I ordered my copy of the novel The Road, which is reviewed over in the Books/Media Reviews forum. The reviews I've read make the doomiest scenarios outlined here sound rather breezy in comparision.

Well...I watched episodes 2-4 today. Gotta say, this show is going downhill fast.

Gripes from episode 2:
1. What kind of "clinic" keeps premature babies on ventilators? Around here they get shipped to a regional specialty hospital.
2. That must have been the world's smallest salt mine if they were all jammed in that tight.
3. Telling people to drink Betadine strikes me as being a very bad idea.

Gripes from episode 3:
1. Black "cop"/CIA guy only mortars the horizontal joints while walling up his secret stash in the basement. Gotta think people are going to wonder why there's no mortar on the vertical joints.
2. Everyone has flashlights. Where are they getting batteries?

Gripes from episode 4:
1. You can't suction gasoline 20 feet straight up using a plastic garden hose as a suction line.
2. While waiting on the power, the doctor bags the baby using an adult ambu bag. Baby ambu bags are the size of a lemon, not a football. Use the adult version and you'll hear a little POP as the baby's lungs explode.
3. CPR doesn't cure radiation poisoning. If you are dead enough to stop breathing from radiation poisoning, you are dead. CPR is just going to prolong the drama a few more minutes.
4. Adrenaline doesn't wake people up from a coma.
5. Just before dying, radiation man goes into an absolutely beautiful sinus tachycardia at 120 bmp. The monitor apparently realises that despite having such a lovely heart rhythm, radiation man is supposed to die in this episode, so it starts alarming wildly. The message? "Lead Fail" (i.e. one of the little stickies isn't making contact w/ his chest.)

Lots of people have batteries but they should run out soon.

Moreover, you are the only person with any medical knowledge in the entire world.

It's called the suspension of disbelief. You have to let them do medical magic in order to keep important characters alive.

As for the salt mine, I think they were only in the first chamber.

But yeah, you can't suck gas up from 20 feet with a garden hose, that part of the show was crap.
