Meet Mrs. Recluse, my new friend

Postby The_Toecutter » Sun 01 Oct 2006, 21:46:36

I named her Mrs. Recluse. After all, she is a brown recluse.

Here she is, just before I picked her up.
Image

Isn't she gourgeous? She later started crawling up my arm.
Image

She's just chillin' on my arm in this one:
Image

She crawls down my arm back to my hand:
Image

Chillin' around on my hand. She's cool with it.
Image

Now she's on my finger.
Image

And a kiss, before I calmly carry her upstairs and outside. I can't have her biting me in my sleep now, can I?
Image

I took her outside. Hope no one eats her, she was cool. Kiddies, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.

Google image search 'brown recluse bite' if you wish to know what these things can do. The results are never pretty. These are dangerous. She was, however, very cute. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'd')id you "pick her up" or allow her to crawl upon you? The former seems very dangerous, the latter just stupid.

I picked her up. I didn't want her to crawl away somewhere and hide. The idea of getting bit by one of these while I am sleeping does not sit well with me.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'w')hat if that spider bites a child or its babies bite someone. truly foolish toecutter.

It's the responsibility of the parents to teach their kids that these spiders can be dangerous. I released her in my yard. That has about the same chance of her biting someone(besides myself) as letting her stay in the house which I live.

They have at least as much right to exist on this planet as we do, anyway. I'd even wager that their species will outlive ours.

Hardly. I'm no expert. I can handle them well, but I probably only know of like 10 specie of spider. Steve Irwin really knew his shit.

I'm an engineer, not a biologist or a herpetologist. I do like to do dangerous things for fun though, and I've done things orders of magnitude more dangerous than this ever since I was a child. Some of them could have gotten me jailtime.

You ain't lived until you've baited the ATF one too many times.

Man, I got bit by one of those on my upper arm, course it was not surprising considering I was crawling through an 18- 24 inch sewer tunnel with thousands of spiders raining down on me and getting into my clothes and such. It hurt like hell! Within an hour or so it felt like someone was jabbing a hot icepick into my arm. Then I got sick, felt feverish, dizzy to the point of falling over almost. Finally after 12 hours or so it dropped to a throbbing ache and then began to itch and burn. It took like a month to heal. The damage was limited to what looked something like that 3rd to last pic so not TOO bad. It healed up ok though and I have only a small scar.

As much as I love them, I've never seen one in person. Those just aren't around where I live.

Why thank you. That's my favorite shot as well.

I couldn't get the webcam closer though. It started to make her nervous, and I wouldn't want to get bitten by one of these!

We've got plenty of Black Widows in San Diego. I've seen them. I stuck my hand into a pool filter once and damn near got stung by one. You've got to be some kind of crazy man to let a toxic dangerous spider crawl on you like that! They don't respond to "good vibes". They are instinctual creatures with fearsome venom.

Keeping that fact in mind when deciding how to handle it and what moves to make is what kept me from getting bitten. I excersized extreme caution.

She was awfully cute though.

Kind of like handling snakes, as long as they think they are getting somewhere they (generally) won't turn and bite. But just don't try to grab and hold. just let em run though your hands and offer up the next perch as they get too far extended...

We have tons of black widows here, I have seen a dozen or more just moving wood around. Pretty but I like 'em better away from the house.

My father was bitten by a brown recluse. They had to remove necrotic tissue for weeks. He was a diabetic so that exacerbated everything. It took a long time to finally heal and he had a scar ever after that.It was on his forearm.Awful, putrid, painful event.I work in a barn and generally don't mind spiders as part of fly control. With brown recluses or black widows it's an instant squish. If I'm not sure-squish anyway. You are absolutely foolhardy to handle such a creature.

I think I've seen spiders like that in my house but I'm no expert so I don't know... I'll kill them from now on I guess. I lived in San Diego as well... Black Widows everywhere, never bothered me.
